Which parameter changes to fit movie on a single cd?

Hy kwag!

First of all, let me tell you, that i am nearly a newbie in digital video.
But in the past i have "learned by doing" and it was more or less successful.

Then i found your template at vcdhelp.com and was really surprised, what you have done. I have tried to fit a 88 minutes movie ( a captured vhs) with tmpgenc 2.53 (352x576) on a cd-r 80 but the mpeg-file was 870MB.

So, my question is: Which parameters have i to change, to fit the movie on a single cd. Do you have instructions about this?

Thanks for your help

Hi sigi,

I don't know about anyone else, but I've always found that vhs captures don't compress down as small as dvd rips. I've assumed this is because caps are more 'noisy'. So, the more you try to clean up the incoming video first (using various filters in avisynth or vdub), the smaller your file will compress. I would try this first, and if that doesn't shrink it enough, you may have to resort to a 352x240 aspect ratio, instead of 352x480.

Sig,

It sounds like you almost have the size down to fit onto one cdr.
I'd try lowering the audio bitrate to say 192, 160, or even 128 if you want to go that low. This would leave more bitrate for the video. Have you tried lowering the video bitrate, as well, too say 2200, or 2100 ? A 2-pass encode may help with your quality/size as well.

@sigi:

The problem is that when you captured the VHS, the frame rate is 29.97, and you have to do Inverse Telecine to bring back the frame rate to 23.976.

I assume VHS NTSC. Is your system is NTSC?. Because you said 352x576 and that's a PAL resolution.

Because what you said and the captured file size, it seems like it's an NTSC capture.

If your system is PAL, disregard the rest of this message!.

That's why your file size was so large.

I also posted a mini guide here:
http://www.kvcd.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11

It's related to another conversion, but the method are similar with a VHS capture.

Just substitute .VRO in the guide for .AVI as your capture must be .AVI.

Give it a try, and let us know!.

Hy all!

@Scav: Thanks for your good tip. I will try to use filters in virtualdub before compressing.

@el_mero_zooter: In my first try i used the audio bitrate of 128kbit/s and a maximum video bitrate of 2300kbit/s. In the second i only changed the video resolution to 352x288 instead of 352x576. Then the file was 806MB. This fit on a single cdr. But i donīt know if another adjustment would be better?

@kwag: My system is PAL!

Thanks all!

hi all,
i just need help with a move i recently encoded using tmpgenc. i had a movie 2hours 56mins long, it was was divided up into 3 different mpg files. Before encodeing i joint them all together and the size came to 1.7 gig. then i used the ntsc template (deafault kvcd ntsc template) and the only change i made was to the resolution i changed it to 352x240 the file size came down to 965mb :D that was great!! so then i flicked through the movie to see if everythng was there the movie was great quailty the sound was good and the audio was in sync, the only problem i have though is with the audio. its in sync but its like i dunno the word for it, like in some scences there is a really sharp sound and it makes fuzzing noises like a spark. the "spark" noise only happens in scnes where there is like loud music when there's like 2 ppl talking to each other its fine but in scences where there are more then 2 ppl talker or in scences where they talk louder the spark noise comes back, is there a way around this its really annoying.
p.s the first time i loaded the kvcd ntsc temp the audio settings were as follows 48100HZ stereo 128kb and now when i use the same temp the setting read
44100HZ Joint-stereo 128kb but i didnt save any changes i made with the default temp.

Hi |3|aderunn3r:

Seems to me this was a problem when you joined the 3 mpeg files.

What program did you use to join them?.

If you used TMPEG 2.5x to do this, that is the problem.

If this is the case, try to find the old 12b version of TMPEG on the net for cutting and merging.

hey kwag,
yeah ur right, i used tmpgenc v2.54 to join them but the movie is 2 hours 56 mins long and when i used tmpgenc to join them it missed bits and the movie came down to 2 hours 30 mins, so then i used a program called mpgjoin which i just came across, i can only get 12a or 12d cant find 12b. which one should i use?

Hi |3|aderunn3r:

Try 12a. It should work too.

Hi |3|aderunn3r !

Try to encode each part separately and than try to merge & join them together see if it's prob of merging

Actually the problem is not in the cutting. It's in the joining with the newer versions.

I have cut with version 2.53, and joined with version 1.2, and the file was in N'Sync :P Opps I mean in sync

Join files

Hi Sigi !

If there is prob with joining than don't join the files .
Burn them with NERO without joining (in right order), but don't forget to set 0 delay between tracks and Nero will burn tham as they are one single file .
Playback will be smooth with no probs .

Hi bman:

Be careful with that option. I have seen that even though the delay is set to 0, in some DVD players it will make a small pause before playing the next track.

But if there's no other choice, that's the way to go. :)
