ffmpegX: is it possible to make kdvds on OSX?
 

Hi guys,

Im looking into changing to OSX. But, as good and nice as it is, i still want to create the high quality KDVD's I'm used to with the Windows applications. From the available threads I've read, I can't find if it is possible to make kdvd's on OSX.

Can anyone shed a light on this? I reckon I can't use CCE, I'll have to use ffmpegx I think. What about avisynth?

Also, is it possible to get dvd-rb working? Maybe with WINE?

well, having OSX installed on my laptop 8) learns me the following. Avisynth doesn't work, and I can't get it to work with WINE.

Guess it's too soon for full KVCD encoding with mac os. (that is, using it to its full extent with avisynth filtering)

But you can still make your KDVDs with ffmpegX, because it includes the Notch matrix ;)
Just use ffmpegX to encode your video, and other tools to author the DVD.

Errm, isn't ffmpegx an OSX port of the ffmpeg project?
Because if it is then ffmpegx will surely produce bitrate spikes just as the ones we see with mencoder and ffmpeg.

ffmpegX is an excelent front end and tools, on top of ffmpeg :)
And yes, all ffmpeg bugs are carried over to ffmpegX, because it relies on ffmpeg :?
But it's really the only thing available on OSX that is able to make a KDVD iin an easy way.
Unless you go the manual way with ffmpeg.

I can also choose for mpeg2enc, will that be any better?

Unfortunately that the power of avisynth filtering isn't available yet on MacOS! That is the thing that keeps me away from Mac for video conversion.

On the other hand I don't know if mpeg2enc is any better than ffmpeg :roll:.

Well, I tried several mpeg2 encoders, the best quality to my eyes is ffmpeg. But I haven't tried a whole movie, because I've installed OSX on a P4 machine....it's slooooooooooow. (2 mins movie: 45 mins encode time).

And I can't seem to select the kvcd matrix with any other encoder but ffmpeg, so the choice is simple :lol:

In conclusion I think that we should wait a bit, until there is good support for avisynth and perhaps other mpeg2 encoders (boy I want CCE to work on OSX). But, that support may perhaps be very soon, with the release of the Intel-Mac's... 8)

Errr, Gamma, ffmpeg is actually one of the fastest encoders out there.
So if ffmpegx is based upon ffmpeg, I sure am surprised with it's lack of performance.
I'm on a regular AMD Athlon XP 2400+ and the speed with mencoder (ffmpeg based encoder) was simply amazing, even beating CCE :!:.
So either something's wrong with your setup or your ffmpegx is playing tricks on you.

hi rui, the thing is that I've installed OSx on a p4 (as described in my previous post). I think you've misread it en thougt that I was talking about a G4 :D

This means that i've OSX running on a x86 platform, and the interface to "translate" x86 calls to osx (rosetta) is what makes it so slow. Rosetta is coded that SSE3 takes care of the "translation", but I've only got SSE2. So the cpu gets it's ass kicked :lol:

But what you're saying about the speed sounds good, I didn't know that ffmpeg based encoders were so fast!! 8)

Ooops sorry but I read it wrong and assumed G4 :oops:.

Yes, it's the emulation that makes it slow. If I had a SSE3 capable processor
at hand right now, I won't notice the emulation!
