Upside down video
 

Hello,

I am attempting to convert .mpg files to a smaller size for playing on a portable device, with TMPGEnc. The video comes out upside-down. I am using the templates from PocketTV to optimize for my AudioVox SMT5600 Smartphone, but the settings don't seem to matter. The videos are recorded television, recorded using Sony VAIO Zone software into an MPEG-1 file. Can anyone here help? Thanks.

you open the mpg1 directly into tmpgenc ?
go in the "environnemental settingfs of the programm and uncheck the Directshow handler (in VFAPI tab).

Yes, I open the MPEG-1 file as the input video and audio in TMPGEnc. I tried unchecking Directshow handler and it didn't change. Any other ideas?

Do you know what is the codec used on your system to handle mpeg1 ?
Are you positive that the video is not upside down when you simply read it in a media player ?

I also need a snapshot of the environnemental settings you have.

I don't know what the codec for MPEG-1 is. How can I find out? I can play the files in WMP10 and the Sony VAIO software perfectly. I have also tried a few other encoding programs, and they seem to work, including TMPGEnc Express (trial version). TMPGEnc is the only software I have used that does this on these files. WMP10 can encode them into small WMV files correctly as well. TMPGEnc seems like an excellent program, but for some reason, it just doesn't work with these files.

I'm not sure what you mean by environmental settings.

Download "Gspot" to find out which Codecs are installed and supported.

He means the environmental settings from tmpgenc, these can be accessed through the menu.

According to Gspot, the MPEG-1 decoder is "MPEG Video decoder"--no vendor. I have taken screen shots of the Gspot output, the environment of TMPGEnc, and an example of the upside down video. I can't figure out how to attach pix here, so if someone could tell me how I will attach them. Or, give me your email and I can send them to you. Thanks.

When you are posting you have a "Image Hosting by ImageShack - ToS" right below the post window.
Use the browse button to find your picture (has to be below 1MB).
Now hit the "Host it!" button and wait for a while.
The picture will be transfered to Imageshack.us servers and you will be given links.
Use one of the "Forum links".
Copy the link and post it.
Then we'll see your picture ;-).

Okay, so :
the mpeg1 decoder on your system is "quartz.dll", that is a part of DirectX. In other words, this si windows itself.

The settings you have are correct.

:arrow: no solution, you perhaps found a bug. Just do as we use to do : use a script, or unckeck the "MPEG1" handler in the settings of tmpgenc, check the directshow one, change the priority of this one to 0, and see if it's better.
Even if this is not the best solution, that can be a workaround.

I tried it on a different PC and it works fine, so I think the problem is with the Sony VAIO Zone software, which probably installed a codec that doesn't get along with TMPGenc. Unfortunately, I can't get rid of VAIO Zone, so I will just have to use a different PC for TMPGenc.

BTW, I tried the last suggestion here as well, still no luck.

I'd be interested if there is anyone out there who has VAIO Zone software and uses TMPGenc successfully.

Can you import your mpeg1 into virtualdub and tell us what happens ?
It seems that your systeme capture the file upside down !

It this the the case, we can spent a looooottt of time to have them correctly displayed into tmpgenc 8O

Note: it can be a good idea to upload a small sample to rapidshare.de

And as a last resource there is always the possibility of using an Avisynth command to flip the image upside down ;-).

All other media software, be it players, encoders, etc. plays these files correctly (and right side up). TMPGenc is the only one where I have seen this problem. And TMPGenc does fine with the same files on another computer. That's why I think it is some incompatibility between the Sony software and TMPGenc.

I'll try to get a very short file soon and upload it, if you folks would like to take a look. I think you'll find that it is fine, though, as long as TMPGenc is not used on a PC that has Sony VAIO Zone software installed. If I get time, I'll call Sony tech support and see if they can tell me what it is about their codecs that may cause TMPGenc to do this. They usually get very quiet anytime I mention copying or translating files, though. Apparently they are a little sensitive after the whole DRM/CD/rootkit fiasco. :!: :oops:

But for now, I just burn the files onto a DVD and bring them into work, and use my work PC to run TMPGenc and do the encoding. They are excellent on my phone with PocketTV, and TMPGenc is a fantastic product. The price isn't bad either. :wink:

Ok, if you want a workaround (not a fix) just use FlipVertical() in your script.
Something like:
This should fix the upside down problem with tmpgenc.
But if you try to open that script with VDubMod or with a media player you will now see everything upside down when it used to be ok.
But if you want to encode at home and don't want to be dependant on Sony's tech support I suppose this is your only chance.
