KVCD: How will upping the resolution on LBR template affect the movie?

GOP structure of the LBR is one of the best, I was told. The KVCD+ template at X480 doesn't look as good as LBR, so I am think of upping the res for the LBR to a get a clean pic. Is this okay ?

Hi LadyMiles,

You bet it is :D
Actually, I'm currently evaluating a MAX frames per GOP on all templates, and for the 352x480 PLUS I'm working on it's "1,5823,2,1,24" and for the 528x480 X3 and 704x480 X2 it's "1,5823,30,2,30". These parameters are to be used with the file prediction formula. Don't use the default CQ_VBR values, because the file size will be larger than before. Also change the motion estimation to "Fast". All templates ( The PLUS ) will go to that mode from now on, because it produces the best quality and less artifacts. Also it's the fastest encoding mode. The LBR used the thightest GOP of all. This compensates for the lower resolution. On the higher resolutions, the GOP can be more relaxed ( longer ), and still maintain a good size/quality/compression ratio.
Give it a try and tell me your results
I'll be updating all templates with the new settings tomorow. But I have to be very clear that it's to be used with file prediction or with DVD2SVCD. If not, people are going to try and fit X time with the template, and they'll get a very large file.

I was working with Austin Powers 1 and it did not do so well. I think maybe the dvd it's self just has a lot of noise. I tried both temporal smoother and C3d.

Some DVD's are very badly authored.
I know what you mean. 8)
You can try TemporalSmoother(2,2) on those. Larger values will create a ghosting effect and spoil the video.

Kwag,

If we take the LBR template, and adjust the GOP to 24's for P/max and set the resolution to 320x480, is there any benefit with tinkering with the min/max bitrate values at all?

I use the LBR template for most things, and it works perfect. But I have a movie currently that is quite long, so I'm willing to use 2cds for it. Since I'm using 2cds already, may as well use 320x480 as well, right? :) Doing something like 300min, 1750max with a 25 CQ_VBR setting to start seems right...

Hi Daagar,

I suggest you try 1, 18, 2, 1, 18 for your GOP. That's what's going into the new LBR. I just haven't had the chance to post the updated templates. All PLUS are now 1, 18, 2, 1, 18 NTSC, and 1, 15, 2, 1, 15 PAL. The LBR MIN bit rate is 300Kbps, and the MAX is 1,800Kbps. Some people reported unsmooth playback ( me included ;) ) on low lit scenes on some DVD players. With these parameters, the file prediction formula must be used, in order to fit the time you want on a CD-R. This GOP is going on all PLUS templates, as I found it's the best value to work with the KVCD Q. Matrix.
Also, for Anime films, you should lower the GOP to around 1, 10, 2, 1, 10 for both NTSC and PAL. That should fix the artifacts on most Animes. Be aware that the file size will be larger than with the regular GOP. So you'll fit less time on a CD-R.

Thanks Kwag! I use dvd2svcd now that he has the file prediction fun included, and even with the old LBR GOP parameters it worked like champ here. I'll update it with these values and let it rip.
