Well, if you want a MUCH better Audio Quality, you should do the following

1.) Load the DIVX-AVI with VirtualDub, set the Audio AND Video Settings to DIRECT STREAM COPY

2.) Modify the AUDIO to your likes (whatever that is... (for example mono to stereo stretching, etc..))

3.) Then use FITCD as in the previous post described
4.) Then use TMPEG as in the previous post described..

Well - At least thats the way I do it... Works fine :) , no sync problems  , and plays in my cheap DVD with no probs.... :D

it works for me

the source from 90% of the movies I convert are also from divx files.
I always just use tmpge and virtualdub, so I was curious to see what your guide had to say.. but your link is bad.

Is there something else to consider to improve quality of vcds from a divx source? - other than extracting the audio first as a wav to insure the audio will be in sync?

I guess that is a vaque question.. I was just curious to see what your guide had to say

DVD2SVCD is also a great program for converting Divx to KVCD. Check out the other forums for more info.

A tip: When possible, use SVCDs to convert to KVCD - the quality is much much better than converting Divx.

(Aside: Why convert SVCDs? 1) Your player can't handle SVCD, even with the header trick and/or 2) You want to convert high-bitrate multi-CD movies down to a single CD with almost no loss of quality)
