Good God, man, you must rent it tomorrow. Tonight, if there's a nearby 24-hour video store ;).

As for me, I've been trying to figure out HeadAC3he (press "options" twice?? What kind of design is that???) encoding and making bins of both American Pie and Resident Evil.

I've not watched either of them yet :P.

wrt receivers, how would I know if mine supports ProLogic II? I know it does normal ProLogic...

Hey, I have an RCA model that does Prologic II, the ones you can but at Radio Trash(Shack 8O ), and it compares to models > $1,000 and it's only ~250.00. At least the reviews show same quality as high end receivers. They even compared it to "Onkyo" which is VERY expensive.

I think I'm going shopping tomorrow .

It looks like a nice unit, it's $100 off, got a high rating and a good review... 100 watts per channel, component in/out, HDTV-ready, Pro Logic II, Dolby Digital, DTS and DTS ES.

It doesn't do Dolby Digital EX (whatever that may be) and only has two s-video inputs (currently I have three: DVD, sat receiver and VCR) but I can put the VCR on composite because it's only necessary for S-VHS and I never use that anyway. It also doesn't do s-video switching but my current unit doesn't either.

I should be able to sell the old one for $100 or so. Won't be too much out of pocket.

The wife's going to be thrilled ;).

Yep, RCA seems to have turned around quite a bit.. the newer RCA Receivers are pretty damn good (I plan on getting one in January), and all their High End Home Entertainment stuff (ie: HDTV's, HUGE TV's) have been getting excellent reviews. Kudos, RCA!

I didn't even think of the rat shack. I'll check their web site :).

Bah, only Panasonic, and more expensive than Future Shop.

kwag 12-23-2002 02:41 AM

@ SansGrip ,

Why don't you take along your "American Pie" KVCD and test it at the store. This way you'll verify if it does indeed work correctly with your new receiver  ( At least that's what I've done every time I've gone to buy a DVD player. I take along a couple of KVCDs to test compatibility 8) )

Me too :). BTW, anyone else having problems recently with the forum not responding for some time?

rendalunit 12-23-2002 03:38 AM

I recently purchased a Sherwood RD-6108 for ~$130 US. from Fry's Electronics. I'm very happy with it (so far  )- it supports Pro Logic II and dts. I couldn't find any reviews of it though :?:

Just watched Resident Evil (352x480, CQ_VBR 15.55) and it looks very good -- not DVD quality due to the relative softness, but still very watchable and of course a lot sharper than standard VCD. Also the bitrate was high enough that there was hardly any noticible Gibbs...

Again, though, I had that freezing at the beginning of the disc. However this time there was very bad corruption at the end, video and audio, but only in the last 5 minutes or so.

Is this another symptom of too-low minimum bitrate?
Maybe it's a symptom of bad media (try another brand of CD-R, or maybe just another batch).

Did you overburn the disc? I've found that when I overburn video, I tend to get corruption towards the end of the disc (where it's writing where it's not supposed to write ), depending on the media used.. some do it, some don't.
