TMPGEnc: SVCD to VCD causes Occassional Audio Issues?
I am converting an SVCD to VCD using a slightly modified KVCD templated. The template is the KVCD-CQ-352x240-_NTSCFilm_-PLUS template with the quality and max/min bitrates increased. No padding. In addition the frame rate has been set to 29.97. Audio was also changed to 224kbps.
It Encodes fine. I was ecstatic. I reencoded the entire movie, went upstairs and watched the whole thing. Not a single problem at all. I watched it again the next day with some friends, this time the audio died on the second CD. About half way through it just stopped playing. Stopped the VCD, tried to fast forward to that part again. Found out that fast forwarding also kills the audio. The original MPEG on my PC is fine. I was stumped. Next day I watched it again. Got through the first, and second CD's. This time the Audio issue was on the third CD. Same deal, just stops playing. This is what gets me - it works perfectly sometimes, and then not others. It's the same movie, the CD's look fine and play great in PowerDVD. I'm completely stuck, what have I done wrong here?! Here was how it was encoded. Stick SVCD into CD drive. Use DVD2AVI v1.76+ to save a project. Load that project into TMPGEnc v.2.59.47.155 load and modify the KVCD template and encode. I don't know where else to post this - frankly I am not sure where the problem really lies. Any help is appreciated. David |
Hi David,
Maybe your video bit rate boundaries are too high. You didn't provide that information. Also, what standalone DVD player are you using :?: -kwag |
Bit Rate Boundries:
Max 3000 Min 1500 I thought at first that it might be the MAX but I have written VCD's at a CBR of 3300 and it worked fine. The standalone is a Toshiba SD1200. I really don't like it and am planning on replacing it. What bugs me is why it works perfectly sometimes and then not others. Thanks. David |

I would set MIN=300 to 400, MAX no more that 1,800. This way your encoding will be more space efficient. 1,800 is close to the MAX bit rate in what's called the CPB ( Constrained Parameter Bitstream ) which defines a limited set of sampling and bit rate parameters for MPEG-1. I believe that most (almost all) standalone DVD players that handle VCD follow this set, instead of being rigid at only VCD specifications. These parameters are: Code:
Horizontal Resolution: <= 768 samples Let me know if any changes work :D -kwag |
