KVCD: right template settings to fit movie onto 1 CD-R?
 

I want to convert the DVD of Training Day to MVCD. The movie length is about 115 min. In general there is no problem to fit that film onto 1 80min CD-R. But I have the pioneer DV-444 as standalone Player and this one can't handle low bitrates unter 760kb.

Can anyone tell me the right template settings to fit that movie onto 1 CDR with pioneer dv-444?

You could try authoring and burning the file as SVCD. This works for me on my DV-343, but only if the resolution is n x 576 (480 for NTSC).

Does authoring as SVCD mean that I have to use a MVCD MPEG2 Template?

Or Do I have to check the button svcd header when I mux with bbmpeg?

General Question:
Does the pioneer dv 444 NOT have the problems with low bitrates when I produce a SVCD?

You can (and should) encode as MPEG-1 but like you said, mux it as SVCD and then burn it as SVCD.

My model can play bitrates as low as 150 when it's done this way. If I mux and burn as VCD, I get clicks in audio even when the minimum is set at 700 :evil:

Hi Jack,

Just a note on MVCD. MVCD was a spawn of the original KVCD templates. The very first start :D. They are nothing more than a standard TMPEG template with a very long GOP that makes a very long play time, but not very good quality. The current KVCD and KDVD templates sport an optimized GOP and a custom quantization matrix, which is "very" unique 8). You won't find that matrix in any other mpeg encoder in the industry. If you do, then you know where it came from :wink:

Okay! When You say MVCD templates are waste of time then I bookmark my eyes on KVCD.

What do you think about the min bitrate probs of the pioneer dv 444? With which settings I ca fix the audio skips and so on?

Burn your MPEG-1 as SVCD. Then it should play on your Pioneer :wink:

The Video even freezes when I mux it as a SVCD. I have no audio skips now but the video freezes for a second or get many artefacts.
In my opinion it's a true problem of the pioneer dv-444 and low bitrates < 600-650 kb.

Don't mux it as an SVCD. Create it as a KVCD mpeg 1 as normal and then load the into VCDeasy and chose SVCD for the burn type...try that and see how it goes.

ok, I'll try this. Do you have this player, too? I can't believe that this is the sollution of this problem. But I hope!!


Question: Which min. Bitrate should I set when you say that the player can play it when burning as a SVCD??

I have the 343, so I can't say for sure that it will work for you. I did it with the samples that Kwag has posted in the past. Just loaded them into VCDeasy and burned as SVCDs. Makes things a lot easier. I had trouble with audio ect with non-standard resolutions until I tried that.

I didn't change the min bitrate.

Let us know if it works for your player. Try it with one of the samples and that way you'll know its not a problem with the way you did the encode. Thank goodness CD-Rs are cheap =)

Can you please give me a short advice what I have to do in VCDEasy?

You can look through the forums (try the file prediction section) for a sample or two. Then just start VCDeasy, uncheck compliance and keep analyze checked, add your file, then click SVCD 1.0 beside VideoCD type at the top, then click "go"...if your burner is compatible you can put a disk in the drive and will burn it for you...if not then it will write an image file you can burn with Nero.

I used the new SKVCD MPEG2 PAL Template and burned my one minute sample with nero as a svcd. My pioneer detects the cd and when I wanted to play that disc it worked, but the width of the picture didn't fit the tv only the left 2/3. The height were right.

I noticed some light audio skips when playing.

I encoded it with min bitrate:300, max bitrate 2800 528x576.

What did I wrong?

Hi Jack,

That's one Pioneer's pitfalls with non-standard mpeg files 8O. Try the KVCD 354x480 PLUS and burn as SVCD. This way, you'll be doing MPEG-1, but burning as SVCD. If that doesn't work, I suggest you try kvcdx3. Both MPEG-1 and MPEG-2, and also burn as SVCD. If that doesn't work :cry: , I think you'll have to stay with 352x240 resolution on that player.

Thanks for your hints. Now I've used the same template like above, but changed the width to 480. So I got a resolution of 480x576, said SVCD like.

In this case the sample had fit my tv. Great! When I read the log and saw some VBV underflows so I will change the min bitrate to 400kb next time.

Let me have a try, if this modification is suitable for me.
