KVCD: the perfect compromise for video encoding?
 

Hello everyone. I'm newly registered on this forum but not new to the great KVCD concept. I've been casually browsing for months now and have more or less found all my answers from some great questions and answers on these forums!

I've been looking for the perfect compromise for video encoding for some time now, with the ability to be able to play it on a standalone. Today I registered because my last 3 encodes have been too good to be true (obviously being the sceptic I didn't believe the 180mins on 1 CD thing when I first read it!). With all my rips done in the past, I could have saved over 100 CDR's if I'd known about KVCD earlier!

Yes, in my opinion the latest templates have nearly caught up with divx. Really great work!
@ kwag: Do you think they will improve even more or is it time to contribute them to all the vcd-freaks out there?

Of course it's time :D. And as for the DivX thing, I already have done serious tests and this is what I've seen:

For very low bitrates:
DivX beats KVCDs on low motion parts. That is, on still walls and dark areas. It looks very clean compared to a KVCD encode.
For fast motion KVCD beats the crap out of DivX :mrgreen:. You can see it clearly on fast pannings and fast moving objects. KVCD looks WAY cleaner than a DivX.
Please note that this is on bitrates ~2Mbps
On high bit rates, above 4Mpbs, I really can't tell the difference between the two. They are both about the same.
These comparisons were done targeting the same file size with both encodes.

Now with the new FaeryDust filter, this makes a huge difference on still areas for MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 encodes. So we have to compare again :wink:

The only stuff on which I think Divx is really better than kvcd is cartoon/anime. But maybe it's just because the divx decoders have deringing/deblocking filters, and not because of the encoding.

And, it is much faster to encode to Divx (if you don't use B frames) than to mpeg (in my machine at least).

Where can I get the FaeryDust filter from. I would like to test this sprinkle of magic :wink:
