KDVD: 704x480 vs 720x480?
Hi there,
I use DVD workshop to author KDVD, it works perfectly. I am wondering if it is worth it to change the resolution from 720x480 (full-D1) to 704x480, I have tried both, DVD workshop accepted both. Is there gonna be a BIG save to use 704x480 (so that I can raise the CQ value) |

Well here's another little tidbit that I learned recently.
When planning encodes that are Full D1 and the target is an HDTV: The mode called 480p is the lowest of the three HD TV modes, but it does not translate to 720x480, but instead 704x480 ... This according to "Widescreen Review" magazine ... So with this in mind, one can feel good about encoding at 704 instead of 720 as they are simply matching HD spec .... |

720 is used to provide a margin for error when converting from analog to digital. See this page for more than most people will ever need to know about aspect ratios ;). |
Great link :D

have you guys tried using blocks TV Overscan of 3 with 720x480?
In my tests, black borders are not visual when viewed on TV... I still save more space with blocks Overscan set to 3 at 720x480 than overscan set to 2 at 704x480... I'd like to know if you guys have tested this so far... |
You might as well encode to 704x480 with 2 overscan blocks. It's the same as 720x480 with 3 overscan blocks
