KVCDx3 - The picture seems a bit soft?

Hi guys!

I've just tested the new KVCDx3 using the MPEG-2 compression. The results were OK but I've got some questions.

1) I use TMPGEnc 2.510. In my encoded video I can see white dots over the picture, not only when encoding to KVCD, but to VideoCD too. So, this can be only a TMPGEnc problem. Anyone got any idea?

2) KVCDx3 templates uses "Motion Estimate Search" option under "Motion Search Precision". Isn't a good idea selecting "Highest Quality (Very Slow)", instead of the default value that comes with the KVCDx3 template?

3) I can view some noises all over the wall. It's a good idea moving a bit more over the right the quality bar? Or it's better to increase the maximum bitrate?

4) The picture seems a bit "soft". I haven't activated any kind of noise filter in the encoder. It's a problem of the TMPGEnc encoder?

5) Is KVCDx3 in it's MPEG-2 flavour better than Super VideoCD in video quality ;-)? How many minutes (approx.) can I store on a 700Mb / 80 min.s CD?

6) The last question, I promise :)... Can I encode to KVCDx3 using MPEG-2 compression and a different encoder from TMPGEnc (for example Cinema Craft Encoder)?

Thanks for your replies and sorry for my English but i'm italian ;-).
Bye!

Daniele.

This can't be a TMPEG problem. Check your source.

Make sure you have the latest version 2 of the templates. They are ALL set to "High quality" on motion estimation. There is no difference in quality from "High" to "Highest". Actually, the file size is larger when using "Highest quality"

The more you increase the CQ value, the higher the quality and the larger the file size. Look on the "file prediction" forum to see how you cam maximize your quality and space

No :D

KVCDx3 will kick SVCDs ass every time :D. You'll get approx. 2 hour on each CD with the new templates and techniques.

Sure you can, but why would you 8)

Not sure...

Hi Kwag!

I've just readed your precious reply. Thanks very much for your time. I've compressed "A Time for Dancing" (88 mins.) with your KVCDx3 MPEG-2 template using standard settings and the final file size is 1,45Gb. So, you have sayed that every VCD compressed with your template can store approx. 120 mins. But why can I store less than 1 hour? Is one of my errors?

Second: how can I use CCE with your template? I ask this because I've got a registred copy of CCE SP and it produces a better image than TMPGEnc 2.510. The image is more sharp and there are less artifact's blocks. And sure, CCE is a lot more faster than TMPGEnc! I've readed that I must use the GOP structure that comes with your templates and i've got to modify the matrix structure. But, how can I modify this setting? And what's the matrix?

Thanks for all the replyes!
Daniele.

Because you didn't use file prediction: http://www.kvcd.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2102

Sorry :!: , but CCE doesn't allow the long GOP we use here. You can try the KVCD matrix, by patching CCEs matrix. That will (probably) give you even better quality. But for file size, you'll never get what we get with TMPEG because of the GOP. I assume your comment on sharpness and artifacts is on MPEG-2 and around 2Mbps :?:, because CCE is no competition for TMPEG on MPEG-1 at any bit rate or resolution. This is an industry "fact". Above 3 to 4Mbps, there's no difference anymore between the two encoders. Old versions of TMPEG were really inferior to CCE on MPEG-2. Times have changed
