KVCD: Best template resolution for divx?

Hi Guys,
I have been converting to 704x480 with the x2 templates from DivX for a while, 90 min on 1CD , but I want even better quality. I see some recommations for resolutions, but have some questions.
If I have a 640x272 good quality DivX, what is the best template to choose? The x240 seem to give much worse quality than the x480 resolutions even though the source resolution is not that far off?
Also, is the MPEG2 version of the KVCDx3 template better than the MPEG1 version? I don't see much difference.
