@jorel,
In about two weeks DVD2one's update will include selecting the size of the output DVD+-R or DVD+-RW. Being able set the output size to say 4 GB instead of 4.36 allows you to use cheaper DVD-R's which have trouble with playback due buring near their edge or full capacity. There's plans for furure updates for 1:1 disk copy (e.g. menus, chapters, etc.) and being able to split a movie into two disks for higher quality. "MakeItEasy" won't be needed and it will be much easier with DVD2one. I backed up 3 movies with the full version of DVD2one and the results are fantastic. I hope the layered breaks problems is corrected with the next upgrade, since this adds 40 minutes using IfoEdit to correct the Ifo files created by DVD2one. For a first release, this is a very promising program for DVD Backup. I'm still using KVCD for vhs capture to avi using KVCD-LBR or KVCDx3. :wink: -black prince |
Ok, test posponed :lol:
I'll wait for the DVD2ONE update. However, I already mentioned that the quality of DVD2ONE sucks big time if you try to put more than ~4 hours on a DVD. I tried it with "Rose Red" and the result was awful :x However, encoded with KDVD, the result it's beautiful :D -kwag |

and background with my last encode using DVD2one for a 2hr 52min backup to 1 DVD-r. I sure wish I could use SansGrips filters with DVD2one. For a 4+ hour movie, I intend to split this into 2 discs which I could do with DVDXCOPY, but this will be much simpler with the updated DVD2one. Movies under 4.36 GB, I create an ISO with DVD Decrypter and burn with DVD Decrypter. Movies greater than 4.36GB and less than 6GB, I use DVD2one to compress to 1 DVD-R and greater than 6+GB, I split the DVD into 2 discs. I use size (layer 1 or 2) instead of time to decide which way to backup. :D -black prince |
Hi black prince,
I'm doing basically the same, but instead of using 2 DVDs, I encode with KDVD to put two DVDs in one :D The movie "Rose Red" is a full screen movie, and it's 256 minutes long. My encode with TMPEG and KDVD looks identical to the DVD. So it can probably go to ~5 hours before things start to degrade. DVD2ONE is far from that 8), and I don't think it will be any better in the future without sacrificing speed. That's the price to pay for a high speed transcoder against a slow optimized encoder :D -kwag |

@All,
Here's something interesting about DVD2one process. Just burned a movie (4.36GB) using TmgTool on Verbatim DVD-R DataLifePlus #94077. The movie played fine for 1 hour and 35 minutes on my JVC SB60BK stand-alone-player, then it started to skip frames, got very blocky, and finally stopped playing altogether. I believe the inner and outer rims of this DVD-R are hard to read due to poor dye coloring. I have burned a 2 hour 53 minute movie to FujiFilm DVD-R and it plays the entire movie with no problems. The DVD media is sure tricky to get a good burn. Price is no garentee that you'll have a high quality disc. It seems if you can burn less than 4.36GB, like 4 GB, then the cheaper disc could be useful. Alot of these DVDs don't do well when burn to full capacity. I hope DVD2one adds the feature to reduce file size so we can burn to say 4 GB, instead of 4.36 GB (DVD max), then cheaper DVD-R could work. :) -black prince |
@MakeItEasy,
It's more like "MakeItHard". I tried this program, not to create a 1:1 DVD backup, but to add extra pading to the movie and have DVD2one compress to 4.36GB and remove the pading to reduce the final file size to 4 GB or less. MakeItEasy still has bugs and it's a good effort, but the time it takes to get this done is making the Easy very Hard :cry: -black prince |

I burned the same movie with ImgTool and RecordNowMax on my new DVD-Rs just to see if it was the burning program. So now I have a nice 50 DVD-R spindle to use as an enema and about 15 left on my other spindle to practice frisbee launching. I got :smileysex: all the way with this cheap brand. DON'T BUY THIS: http://www.dvd-rwmedia.com/super-dvdr-100.html :teeth: :stickouttongue: -kwag |

and may have found a way to reduce just the movie to 3.8 GB. Testing, testing, testing.... a pading formula that hopefully give me 3.8GB or what every size I want after removing pading. For movies under the picture quality won't be too noticable and the cheap disc may still have some life :wink: -black prince |
Just ran my own test on "MakeItEasy" and DVD2One. I started with 4 different episodes with two shows for each episodes, the main menu showed up on the original as 4 different titles, with two show per title. I Rip'd the ENTIRE DVD with Decrypter. Followed the MakeitEasy guide exactly as present. Just completed the burn with RecordNow DX and came out perfect, menus and all. To keep everything in place I created 3 different Folders i.e DVD1, DVD2, DVD3. After everything was completed I moved the files from the original folder to the VIDEO_TS folder. The Original DVD was a series of old TV Westerns. The running time on teh first DVD was 3:53 min. I am getting ready to do the second DVD (It's a two DVD set for a total of 7 Hours). Not sure if this is going help any one but I would suggest you read through everything first, then start to create.

@Bud,
I guess your total size was less than 4.38GB and DVD2one did nothing to compress your files. @Kwag, I tried this method to decrease the size to 3.9GB using DVD2one, MakeItEasy, and IfoEdit: 1) DVD Decrypter>Mode>File (movie only vob's) 2) Calculate padding needed to decrease vob's to 3.9GB (Total VOB's size / 4.38 ) * 0.5 = padding for MakeItEasy 3) MakeItEasy> input VOB's from 1) and Padding = 0.59GB or 590MB. Total VOBs = 5.35GB / 4.38GB * 0.5GB = 0.59GB or 590MB 4) IfoEdit>"Correct Original IFO files" and "Create New IFO files" 5) DVD2one (compress VOBs + Padding) 6) MakeItEasy to remove padding and run Update to Get VTS sectors 7) Test with PowerDVD or another player 8 ) Check file size of VOB's (should be near 3.9GB) 9) Burn with Imgtool to DVD+-R or DVD+-RW The same movie that wouldn't play completely at 4.36GB now plays without any problems at 3.9GB and picture quality is not any different. It Worked!!! :D I'm going to try more movies and hope the results are the same. :D -black prince |
black prince
No it did compress it down to the required 4.38GB. The starting size was 7.42GB. I Rip'd the entire DVD, menu's and all. Not exactly sure what MakeIt Easy did to the oinignal files, but the end result was great, everything that was on the ogiginal DVD was on the DVD-R, played back without any problems. I think my Padding (Step 2 MakeItEasy) options was somewhere 5MB Bud |

The only real problems I ran into was due to my Cheap DVD-R (TigerDirect had sale $89.00 for 100, BMI I think) Nero will refuse to read them, ImgTool will not read them, RecodNow DX is the only thing I can read and burn to the checp DVD-R's. I tried Nero DVD-Movie/DVD-ISO/DVD/UDF and nothing worked. The cheap DVD-R will not play back on my Portable DVD (Panasonic LV55) they do play back on my Panasonic RV32 and Pioneer DV 343 without any problems. Bud |
@All,
The same videos that wouldn't completely play to the end using cheap DVD-R's are now working thanks to "MakeItEasy" and some tricks. MakeItEasy (v0.15), DVD Decrypter, IfoEdit (v0.95) and DVD2one (full v1.0) are what I used. My goal was to decrease the final VOBs to 3.9GB to avoid burning the max of DVD-R (4.38GB). Seems burning to the max caused read errors near the outer areas of the disc and decreasing the size would keep the burn away from that area. I lost a small amount of picture quality with a smaller file size, but those cheapo DVD-Rs are still usable. Here's how I did it: 1) DVD Decrypter > Mode > File (movie only) 2) MakeItEasy > step 2 > 480MB > PAD (auto) > Destination Folder 3) IfoEdit > Create IFOs (VOBs from 2.) 4) DVD2one > Compress files > New Destination Folder 5) MakeItEasy > Step 3 > Remove padding and Update VTS sectors 6) TmpTool > Burn to DVD-R * Note final VOBs in New Folder ~ 4GB. I also noticed some scenes moving fast and attribute this to "Layer Breaks" passed on by DVD2one. Movie quality was very good and only during certain scenes was there a tiny bit of flashing and tiny bit of Gibbs noise. When looking at the burn side of the DVD-R you could see an unburned ring at the edge of 1/8 inch as opposed to other burned DVD-Rs burned right up to the edge. My test video was "Minority Report" 2hours 20minutes. It looks great and the best part it plays all the way to the end. :) -black prince |
@All,
Finished my third backup with MakeItEasy, DVD2one, IfoEdit and Imptool and everything is playing great. :) The VOBs of 4GB are playing on cheap DVD-Rs with no problem. I will be glad when DVD2one incorporates the file size option and takes care of the layer break problem. It would certainly mean less work. :wink: Ritek DVD-Rs are burning ok to disc max, but I intend to keep using 4GB for insurance. MakeItEasy v0.15 is very easy to use and does automatic calculations for padding. Nice piece of software :D -black prince |
Hi black prince,
I'm still not so sure that the problem is related to the end of the media. My previous burns show errors on random parts of the DVD-R :? More tests to be done ... :roll: -kwag |
