Encoding: Unable to convert avi to Mpeg
 

Hi there ,
I`m new to the making of Vcd`s and I`ve looked at your site , and wanna see if you can help me.
I have the following software , ready fro use:

Nero Burn
TMPGEnc
XingMPEG Encoder and Player
VCD easy
FlasKMPEG

My goal , is to put my movies that I`ve done loaded onto Vcd. At the moment I`m using 700mb CD-R`s and as you know I`m going to have to try and make 2 Vcd`s a film.

I see you have templates , how would I get spiderman down in size?
I have it in 2 files ones 59 mins and the other is 53 mins.
At the mo , I cant get it to go from Avi to Mpeg!
Any ideals , TmpgEncoder says unsupported?

Any help would be helpfull to me

Join the files together in VirtualDub, plus you'll need the appropriate codec's for it to be recognized. Save the new joined file. Then load KWAG's template into Tmpeg encoder, and then load the avi into Tmpeg and then press start, sit back and wait.
To be honest, re-encoding an avi is hardly worth the effort, unless it is of pristine quality. Avi's and DivX's are an already copressed format, what you are attempting is to compress it even further, so unless it is a high quality DVD rip and not low quality one the results you're gonna get will be very dissapointing.

:idea:

Check the audio if its 48000hz / mp3 / or 8bits
I change all 3 in virtualdub and direct stream the video so it wont get reprocessed. TMPG does not like one or more of these parameters.
I change all 3 cause its easier than testing each one.

If you want to keep the movie on 2 cd just use a regular vcd template in tmpg ie.. (standard VCD) and use Nero to Burn them.

If you use the 120min template then process the avi files separately in TMPG and you can load both mpg in nero (just put them in the right order)
There is an option to set the delay (default 5 seconds to 0) in Nero.
It may leave a blip in the movie when it skips to part 2 but its no big deal.

If you try to join the 2 avi in Virtualdub it may work if both files have exactly the same specs but if you did not cut them youself I wouldn't count on that working.

PS I suggest using CDRW until you like the results

how do i check the audio?

also got a dvd rip of a movie , can i get it to a better picture?

I use the tools that I have:

I check the Audio and video information with virtualdub (its free) see menu item "file" and "file information"
Also to see if its 8bits under "audio" click on "full processing" then "conversion" it will tell you what it is prior to converting.

There are a number of filters available in virtualdub but that would mean reprocessing the video which is not a good idea if its a good DVD rip its probably as good as it will get. If there is noise in the picture you may be able to smooth some out, increase the color or brightness or contrast but dont expect too much. I use these filters after doing a capture if there is vhs/tv noise or to crop the edge noise from my capture card.

Once you test this "audio idea" by trying the output file from virtualdub as input to TMPG, (you should know right away since it will accept the input. Dont process the whole file in tmpg just do a sample. If you think it needs improvement to the video then I suggest reading the posts under avisynth. That's what I am interested in learning. Its more advanced but a number of filtering options seem to be available. So far I have used default scripts posted by others (for which I am thankful) so I am not the one who can comment on these until I get a bit of experience.

The only time I got the error which you reported in TMPG it worked after I converted the audio, That does not mean that it is the only cause of this error. I would appreciate it if you try it and post the results. If you only convert the audio and leave the video as "direct stream" the file should convert quickly although you will need more space for the uncompressed audio.

8) Just open the spiderman avi's in virtual dub and select save as wave. Then load the original and the new wave file into tmpgnc and let it encode.
Thats how i had to do it. :D
