Guide to Converting avi files to KVCD?
 

@All,

This post is to get suggestions for another Guide, e.g. MPEG-2 to KVCD,
or DVD to KVCD, etc. Also, if there are more comments about "Guide
to Converting Divx (avi) to KVCD" please let me know. The most requests
will get developed first and the Guide will cover common situations
with conversion. Let's here from you :)

DEFINATELY a DVD --> KVCDx3 guide would be superb. I was trying to do a couple rips myself, combining your excellent DivX --> KVCDx3 guide with the older KVCDx2 guide. But that older guide is just that: OLD! It explains how to use DVD2AVI quite well but it predates the usage of Avisynth scripts. What I found most confusing, as most DVD ripping novices do, is knowing when to do ITVC or deinterlace. And furthermore, I didn't know whether to let Tmpgenc do it or use avs plugins. I finally discovered plugins like Bob() and FieldDeinterlace(), but I know there are others... I'm also uncertain if the same sansgrip filters you've incorporated in your DivX --> KVCDx3 guide are suitable for DVD conversion (e.g. resize filters, SpaceDust, TemporalCleaner). Sooooo... with that in mind, YES, a DVD conversion guide please! :lol:

ReplayTV to KVCD guide
 

I think a great guide would be "ReplayTV captures to KVCD".

The newer ReplayTVs have Ethernet connections, and the MPEG2 files can be copied to a PC, edited, transcoded and burned. At High Quality, ReplayTV captures at 720x480, 9.8Mpbs VBR MPEG2, 224kpbs audio. Captures from digital cable look really nice, especially movies.

The one snafu with ReplayTV files, though, is that the MPG files are slightly non-standard. The biggest error is bad PTS coding in the MPG files, preventing them from being opened in most editing software. Running through Womble ($300) is the most recommended over on AVS Forum, but I've found PVAstrumento ($free) does the job as well. Audio sync can also be a problem in some cases.

Hopefully someone has more experience with this than me; I just got RTV, and am still learning the KVCD best practices, but may write it if no one gets around to it...

Have you tried opening your captured MPEG-2 files with DVD2AVI, and creating a projet file to be processed with TMPEG?
That's what I do with my DMR-E20, which are also sort of non-standard MPEG-2 files. Processing with a .d2v file works flawlessly :D

Thanks Kwag. I could have sworn I already tried DVD2AVI, but I just tried it and the files open correctly. (Also confirmed that VirtualDub and TMPGenc, however, do complain of "unexpected end of file" and "cannot open, or unsupported", respectively.)

Thanks for the tip. I've printed your guide and will give it a try. Still trying to get my head around this stable of tools I've downloaded and not yet mastered...
