Pinnacle instant copy !!!!

Pinnacle instant copy is now out and it will transfer the contents of a 9GB,
dual layer DVD-Video onto a standard 4.7 GB recordable disc.

Also will transfer the contents of a DVD-Video to VideoCDs and SuperVCDs onto one or two disk.

Also will copy CDs

So far the results are Very good.

You know with all the New programs from Pinnacle, DVD2one, and others
my life is much simpler.....I Love It......

Great program as long as you do the DVD Magic registry trick that lets you select which titles off the DVD you want to keep. DVD2One is 3 times faster though but right now can only do the main movie. But these programs kill the fun of avisynth and kwag's templates. Besides 4x DVD+R is a little expensive for me right now, so it is cost effective to put two or three movies on one DVD+R.

kwag 02-25-2003 02:31 PM

You're right digitalize :D
And after this: http://www.kvcd.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2976 I'm seriously thinking about not using DVD's again ( for a while )
The difference is just not that much to justify a movie in a ~4.3GB when I can do almost the same on ~800MB 8O
It's just not 4,300/800 = 5.375 times better in quality
( And it's more fun encoding it yourself  )

The purpose of KVCD originally was to fit 1 movie on 1 CD. Why shouldn't you want to fit 1 movie on 1 DVD? By putting multiple movies on them you lose all extras and easter-eggs. And what's great fun about avisynth? Once I've made my 1st DVD within 3 hours and I can't tell the difference to the original one I'll uninstall it at once! Doing it the other way would only mean to waste my precious time.

kwag 02-27-2003 09:09 PM

That's the great thing about this hobby. You see, with DVD2ONE or InstantCopy, it's impossible to put ~6 hours of full DVD quality on one DVD-R. But with all the techniques that we have done here for KVCD's, we CAN put ~6 hours of film on one DVD-R. Now that is fun and not a waste of space. And btw, what's wrong with long encoding times? I work on my PC at the same time it's encoding, and I never have a problem!
As for the extras, etc., I personally can do without them, and give that extra quality to the main title 8)

I find Instant copy good if I want to keep menus and also for dvds with multple titles. I recently used it on a Star Trek TNG disc and it worked a treat with all the menus etc. Season one was a real bugger to encode with other methods cos of some wierd interlacing but IC has done a brilliant job.

As for most other movies if I just want the movie I still enjoy doing it manually with avisyth etc, 2hrs one cd... you cant beat that for value.

Kwag, actually, is there a way to burn MPEG1 files into a DVD compliant format. That way we should be able to burn 10 to 15 hours per DVD! That would be great to store series.

I saw a thread in the forum about someone doing that (the only change he mentioned was to make audio 48mhz).

Could anyone having done that explain the steps and the DVD authoring software used (some actually automatically recompress the video in mpeg2 format which defeats the purpose).

kwag 03-01-2003 01:31 PM

Hi francks,

MPEG-1s on a DVD can be no higher that 352x240(288). So basiclly, you're stuck with VCD quality on a DVD.

francks 03-02-2003 10:03 AM

Kwag, this is exactly what I would like to do. Instead of having 5 vcds, I would like just one DVD with 5 movies or 15 series at the same great KVCD quality.

kwag 03-02-2003 11:17 AM

Hi francks,

You can to that, but you'll have to reduce the size of the GOP to 15 (PAL) or 18 (NTSC). Other than that, you can still take to your advantage the use of KVCD's Q. Matrix. Make sure the MAX bit rate is not above 1,800Kbps. I believe that is the max permitted for MPEG-1 on DVDs. You can use the KVCD 352x240 PLUS as it is, change the GOP, and set the encode mode to MPEG-2. That template is already set to MAX=1,800. You'll also need to change the encode mode probably to 3:2 pulldown.
Also make sure you encode your audio at 48Khz and not at 44.1Khz.

Edit: Ignore the 3:2 pulldown. That's for MPEG-2

Just to confirm, should i use 1/15/2/1/15 for PAL then? Also do I need to close GOPS?

As for authoring, what program do you suggest that will not convert the MPEG1 stream to MPEG2?

Your GOP is correct :).
Try DVD MovieFactory. I'm currently doing a MPEG-1 DVD compliancy test. Stay tuned. I'll let you know here in a little while :D

Hi francks,

I have an answer for you, and a very simple method
Load the KVCD 352x240 PLUS template.
Change the following:

Set System stream to "MPEG-2 Video".
Set encode mode to "3:2 pulldown when playback".
Set DC component precision to "10 bits".

On the GOP tab, change the MAX frames per GOP to 15 (PAL) or 18 (NTSC).

Now save your new modified template to some other name.
Forget about MovieFactory or DVDit, unless you want to do menus, etc.
Now encode some stuff :)

Here's the simplest way:

Run IfoEdit and click on "DVD Author/Author New DVD".
On "Video" tab, select your encoded .m2v video file.
On "Audio" tab, select your .mp2 audio OR your AC3 audio  ( If you select AC3, you'll fit less data on the DVD, so I would encode the audio as usual with HeadAC3he to mpeg audio. )
Select your "Destination" and click "OK".
That's it. IfoEdit will create your VOBs and DVD directory structure. Now you can do the same for other movies, and when you're done, use VobEdit to join all your VOBs and then run IfoEdit to create a new IFO structure for all your new VOBs. Careful not to overwrite your prior VOBs .
I selected MPEG-2 instead of MPEG-1 because it's a real pain to put MPEG-1s on DVD because all authoring programs are picky and bitchy about specs. Also, I found out that MPEG-1 on DVD MUST BE 1,800Kbps CBR  http://www.disctronics.co.uk/technol...vid_videnc.htm , so you won't have KVCD's advantage of compression :)
Using MPEG-2, you can still us KVCD's matrix, VBR, and highet bit rates.

I just confirmed this by encoding a 5 minute clip, and IfoEdit created a perfect DVD structure. I just moved the files in my temp directory to K:\VIDEO_TS and used WinDVD selecting drive K: as the DVD drive. Plays perfectly :D

Edit:
Also change the output aspect ratio on TMPEG to 16:9, and make sure that if your movie is anamorphic, select the output on your script to be anamorphic too. This is only if you want to maintain the original anamorphic aspect of the movie. If you don't care about this, then don't do it, as you will be saving more bits by encoding non-anamorphic.
Edit-2:
Set the DC precision to 9 bits. Not 10 bits. 10 bits is too high for 352x240 and the low bit rates.

hey all,
this page is a tutorial to kdvd!

:D

ps:
now i want to bye a dvd recorder, all is right to do is.

only need money!

Hi all..

jorel..
I know how you feel. However, I actually HAVE a DVD burner by
CenDyne 4x (DVR 105) model. Anyways, I just wish I could use mine,
but I have SOO many things going on STILL, and I just can't get to the
point of yanking out my other NEW CDRW I just replaced from an old
2x CDRW - pfew!! I have lots of issues. It's called, "procrastination"

Anyways, i'd sure love to try out Kwag's method above. I remember
back on vcdhelp, where I was asking for people's to do a test run of one
of my samples to DVD. In short, they burned successfully :)
That sample was based on one of Kwag's GOP and some tweaking
I was doing back then, ..if memory serves me.

jorel..
Maybe, if you have the time, YOU can search that thread out for me ??
It's back on vcdhelp (or is dvdrhelp now) from last year.. probably some
time in the beginning of the year I think, or maybe not. I'd sure love to
know WHICH sample clip that was. If you decide to jorney on this search
for me, and find that thread, hence the filename, I think I may still have it
in one of my file collection folders (pace I keep my good encodes for later
coparing) then I can see (or Kwag can) what GOP I used in that
clip. THEN, maybe Kwag can tweak the GOP/template after all, in
addition to his Q.Matrix  Sounds Good ??

Some search keys may be, "DVD", "author", "vhelp" etc.

That's up to you though.

Hi jorel..

I just did a bunch of searchies, but I couldn't come up w/ anything
matching anything to do w/ any of my samples and authoring to DVD.

I don't think its around any more, probably archieved or something.

So, you don't have to do any searching after all. I'll do a few more
searching around, but I don't think I'll be finding that thread though.

Thanks anyways..
