how to convert KDVD to CD-R?
 

Hey Folks I'm a newbie and recently discovered the KVCD site. Amazing!
I've been playing around with all the different software and the KVCDx2 and KDVD templates (thanks Kwang)outlined in the KVCD Guides (thanks blackprince & Red-M) and have been amazingly successful in generating well muxed video, split in nice two--> three 700mb packets ready for burnig . My problem is my dvd player doesn't play the KVCD's and I don't have a DVD writer. So I'm trying to figure out if its possible and how to author DVD video to a CD-R.

I've tried:

1) taking the bbmpeg muxed mpegs and using SpruceUp - it complains about improper framerate...? So prevents me from importing any video file created this way.

2) Using IFOedit and muxing either the KVCD or KDVD video (from Tmpeg) with the headac3he audio file. This creates a 1 Gig and a 0.5 Gig vob file. The first is too big for a CD-R so I try the 'splitting to 2 dvd" function and it makes 3 vob files ( this is good and they play fine with powerdvd) but IFOedit always crashes at the end without apparently creating the proper IFO files/VIDEO_TS files? When I try using ImgTool on the split files it says it can't create a proper Video_TS.... However if I try using ImpTool on the original 1 Gig/0.5 Gig file it doesn't complain and appears to beable to create the proper file structure leading me to believe this approach could work if only I could get the files small enough ie: 700mb. I can't find a feature in IFOedit that would allow me to mux to a limit of say 700mb and then start a new file. (ie like with bbmpeg)

3) Using Ulead Movie Maker with the bbmep muxed files. If I choose to make a "DVD files structure" the disc space requirement for my 700mb piece of video goes upto something like 1.8Gigs. Useless to me...

Anyways I apologize for being so long winded but I've tried everything I can think of as a novice and I'm running out of ideas. I'm so close but so far...

Maybe what I'm trying to do isn't possible or I'm just going about it the wrong way? Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jag,

KVCDs are not DVD compliant files, so if you want to put them on a DVD-r, you're going to have to re-encode. Before you go into that, please download the KVCD compatibility image here: http://www.kvcd.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2464 and see what resolutions will work on your player.

I have tried the compatibilty image and with no luck. This is why I've been trying these different ways of taking the KDVD tmpeg file and the headac3he audio file and somehow remux them as multiple 700mb DVD compliant files that can be burnt on multiple CD-R's.

Is this a possibility or am I simply wasting my time?

I guess what you're trying to to is a cDVD (Compact DVD) right :?:
Have you tried that in your player, burning a DVD structure on a CD-R :?:
Because the number of players in the market that can do that is limited, and I mean you can probably count them with one hand :D

Yes ( I'm wanting to make a cDVD) forgive my ignorance that's exactly what I've been trying to do. I just didn't know what it was called.

Okay, that's a big misconception on my part. :oops: I just assumed a DVD file structure would work just as well on DVD or CD media...


Any suggestions as to how I could test my player for compatibilty...

Would I just copy a DVD's file structure and a vob file under 700mb to a CD-R?


If this did't work then am I right to assume that my only other option would be to get another DVD player?

I think there's a cDVD image at vcdhelp.com you can download.
Check under the tools section, left side, on their main page.

Well, after a bunch of fiddling around I discoverd that if I encode at 29.97 fps the KVCDX2 template works for this player. :lol:

As it turns out the miniDVD format did work for this player as well. But as this doesn't work with my backup player I guess I will be staying with the KVCDX2 template until I get a DVDR.
