WHat is the best CQ to shoot for for good quality and compression?

I see the default values for the templates are 60 and 70. Is there much visual difference between 70 and 75? 60 and 70?

It depends on your source and the size of your TV, but you can usually expect major improvements going from 60 to 70, and likely noticeable improvements from 70 to 75. Kwag has said in the past that anything below 60 is unacceptable to him.

At what CQ settings can you notice improvements if you start at a CQ of 60. Can you see a difference at 61 or at 65? Just curious if someone has tested different CQ settings to see where the major jumps in quality are. I usually use a CQ of 70-80 right now.

i do an "tom & Jerry" in 352x240 lbr mpeg2 ,60 minutes at CQ 100
and the result is:

8O 8O 8O 8O :yippie:

I have not tried the LBR template yet. I've been using the KVCD 352x240 Plus for my encodes. I did a dvd rip at a CQ of 70 and it looked really good. I was wondering if I bumped it to 72 or 75 would I really notice anything? I also did a VHS transfer (captured @ MPEG-2, 352x480, 3600K) and encoded it at a CQ of 80 and it looks pretty good.

I have not tried file size prediction to squeeze the most CQ out of a movie to fit on a disc. I generally just let it go at somewhere between 70 and 80 based on the length of the movie. If it's a 90 minute movie I try a CQ of 80, over 90 minutes I try 70 or 75.

file size prediction is the best way.
but if you don't use and have space,
increase the CQ and got better result.
