KVCD: What are the settings for a perfect encode?

I am having great success with filters and other tips and techniques. I've also done some amazing DVD to one CD conversions but here is my question: When converting to ONE CD, you must except "some" drop in quality but what are the settings for a "perfect" reproduction?

By "perfect" I mean no macro blocks in dark areas, no fog problems, no grainyness at all! I don't care how many CD's (for 120 minutes at 352x240) I just want a perfect reproduction of what I see in VDub from the AVS file?

What Quantize Matrix? What GOP? What CQ? What template?

FYI, I am doing a VHS to VCD conversion (using nomosmooth, conv3d, FixVHSOversharp). I am very happy with what I see comming from the AVS script, I just want that exect quality on the VCD. My DVD player can except Mpeg1 at a max bit rate of 5000 but no SVCD.

Hi MrTibs,

I think that you can put just about any movie on two CDs using KVCDx3. You don't need more 8)
The quality on two CDs should be almost equal to a DVD.

If you do not care about how many CD's you use, here are the best settings I found for MPEG1
Resolution: 704x480
Minimum Bitrate:1500
Maximum Bitrate 2500 or higher if your player will accept it.
Constant Quality: 90, anything higher is unnoticeable to the eye.

For VHS conversions I find using FaeryDust as the only avisynth plugin works wonders, makes it look almost like a DVD capture. It is extremely slow though.

Hi MrTibs..

VHS.. is my hobby and is usually my Friday wind-downs plus Pizza - - gets
my weekend off to a right start.

If you source contents are store bought movies, then definately perform
some IVTC on them. Ok to use AVIsynth for them. Until something better
comes alone, I like to use (in simplified view) this tipicle script
for "Film" movies:

Code:

x="h:\minc.01.avi"

txt_dir="c:\w98\system\"

LoadPlugin(txt_dir+"decomb.dll")

 segmentedAVISource(x)
 ConvertToYUY2()  ### <-- needed for decome to work

Telecide(swap=false, post=false, guide=1)
Decimate(cycle=5)

Next, I frameserve the script into vdub and I use
flaXen's VHS filter, and then finally, I frameserve into TMPG.

Source -> AVIsynth [decome.dll] -> vdub [flaXen VHS] -> tmpg
or
Source -> AVIsynth [decome.dll] -> vdub [flaXen VHS; temporal cleaner] -> tmpg

I use the kVCDx3 (modified of course, for 352x480) for my Apex AD-1500.

Hope that helps some.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

I did use the KVCDx3 template (modified to 352x240 - the max for my player) and the result was amazing! Even at 352x240 the result is much better than the VHS tape and every bit as good as a DVD rip at the same resolution.

The movie I converted was Alien - 210 minutes which came out at about 1.2 gig(CQ @ 100%).

Some movies you just don't want to "squeeeeze" onto one CD.
