KVCD on 99 minute cd @ 1.02 Gb works!
 

I tried the 99 minute cds with great success. I enoded two movies (Atlantis and TimeCop) from VHS with a CQ at 100. Both came out to about 920 meg and of course both easily fit on the 1.02Gig [Mode2] CD and played perfeclty on my DVD players.

I used VCDEasy to burn the cds as per instructions on their web site.

With the added head room (1023mb) you could fit 145 minutes on one CD with the 120 minute template or 124 minutes at 528x480!

Now that's cool :D

99 minute CD's?? Now you're talking!! Where can I find them, and what is the average cost per disc??

With 1GB available, that should make just about any movie with KVCDx3 look very close to DVD quality, even on a HDTV :wink:

Staples is the only mainstream brick-and-mortar store that I know for sure carries them sometimes, but it's rather hit-and-miss from store to store...I've heard CompUSA does occasionally as well. Unfortunately, their online stores don't seem to even know that these discs exist (I've even emailed Staples' "customer service" :roll: department before to enquire why they don't sell 99-min discs online, but received no reply whatsoever :evil: ). If some reputable big-name store would just sell the darn things online, they'd corner the market.

There are lots of lesser-known online stores that sell them if you just do a google-search, but you should probably do a bit of homework before you go trusting some of them. A couple good places for doing "background-checks" on online stores are www.resellerratings.com and www.bizrate.com . Keep in mind though that people who are dissatisfied with a store's service are more likely to leave negative feedback at these kinds of sites than happy shoppers are to leave positive feedback.

Also keep in mind that not all dvd players (or cd players) will play them properly, and not too many cd-burners can even burn 99-minute discs, so you have to make sure yours does before wasting your money on them (they're pricier than normal discs) . If you've got a newer Lite-On brand burner, you should have no problems burning them (they're one of the few brands that openly claim compatibility with these 99-min discs).

I honestly don't know why there's not a greater demand for these discs, because they're great for fitting those longer movies onto. (although I think burning a GB of data onto one is really pushing the limits). I've heard of people having playback issues when going over 970MB or so...most 99min discs I've seen say either 850MB or 870MB as their capacity, which translates to 950-970MB for Mode2 video data).

EDIT: Whoops! :oops: Guess I was sleepy when I posted this...I got my stores mixed-up. CompUSA is the store that I know definetly carries 99-min discs sometimes....Staples is the store that I've heard might carry them.

I couldn't find a store in my area that caried them so I bought them off of Ebay. The brand that I purchased are "Melody". I paid $7 for 10 and $13 for 25.

Or course, there is no guarintee that any of them will work in your burner or DVD player. My burner is a Cicera (Panosonic) and my DVD players are a Toshiba 2800 (1800) and Technosonic (Mustek).

Its funny how just a little bit more room on a single CD makes all the difference.

Edit: The video capacity is based on calculations used to determine the capacity of 80 minutes CDs. Actual storage may varry slightly.

In Germany every Computershop has 99min CDs...
I did some movies but I decided that 80 Minute CDs will be fine for most movies... If I want to have a 2nd audio stream then I use 90 or 99 minutes CDs

maplin in the UK and Ireland stock 99minute CD's. They are not cheap but trying one out with your system would not break the bank and let you know whether its worthwhile hunting the web for cheaper CD's.

I think that markrb over at the doom9 forum did some tests on the 99 min discs some time ago. It might be interesting if you wonder about the compatibility. I haven't read the thread myself since those discs would mean bankruptcy to me, they are very expensive here. IIRC, he found out a minute marker where most player would simply stop playing the disc properly.

Plextor has a new CD Writer out that can record 99 min on a 80min CDR and 120min on a 99min CDR. It's supposed to be backwards compatible (should work with a standalone DVD player). My Lite-On burner, creates KVCDs on 99min. CD-Rs, and they play flawlessly on my Cyberhome ADL-528 :wink:

I have an lite on but I don't think there is a place here in Puerto Rico where they have does 99 min cds maybe ill ask my friend luis from Paint Weiber to see anybody has it down here. :)

overburn to 920 MB and they are really cheap (~ 0.7 €).

Another question regarding the ADL-528: do you got any experiences
playing DVD-R(W) / DVD+R(W), cause my player seems to like none of
them :evil: (already tried +R/+RW/-R authored/burned with various
progs and the play fine on other standalones)...maybe a problem with
the DVD-Drive inside...

The brand I'm using for 99min. CD-R is called "Primeon", and I was able to fit a 1GB movie on it, with overburn, and it played fine until the very last second on my ADL-528 :!: :D
I know that a DVD-RW works on my Cyberhome at least. I can't remember the brand though, but it was the cheapest DVD-RW available...
no problems here.

To test real capacity of a particular CD-R/CD-RW, one can use the "Feurio" program (shareware) that has a special utility for this.
So I think everyone can test real capacity of any combination CD Writer/CD-R, 99min also. :idea:
