KVCD: Failure! massive black borders top and bottom?
Damn it! I was sure this was going to be the perfect one. I just played my 2 disc burn of Carlitos way.
It plays in the centre of the screen with massive black borders top and bottom. Its like watching it through those glasses eskimos wear to prevent snow blindness. The audio skips every 3 seconds. Heres my story. Daewoo 5700 DVD Player Duron 700 And Pioneer 16x dvd rom Used Sefy's beginner guide to ripping Dvd to Svcd Substiuted Kwags template Burned as VCD non standard per Kwags template Ripped with Smart ripper frameserved with Dvd2Avi encoded with TMPGEnc Chaptered and Burned with VCD Easy Followed things step by step. CHOSE to use 2 discs, so I modified Kwags template slightly. Increased CQ to 74 from 70 and min bitrate to 500 from 300 1st disc was 578 mb 2nd disc was 498 mb If we were looking for a silver lining... The picture is perfect (without the freezing I am used to experiencing when I use the template on divx downloads from the internet.) totally disheartned right now... Eightball |

Did you burn one of the samples in the site to test your DVD player before commiting to a full video encode? I haven't had reports yet on Daewoo 5700. You might try lowering the resolution to 352x240 on the template. Not every DVD player likes 352x480. If at 352x240 it still doesn't play correctly, then I'm sorry to say that your DVD model doesn't like MPEG-1 VBR. And nothing can be done. With KVCD template or any other encoder. kwag |
Don't give up EightBall
Hi EightBall !
To get over the black borders around try this : TMPGEnc -> settings : advanced->Source aspect retio->4:3 display video arrange Method -> Full screen First try to REENCODE small PART of a movie see if it works to you Sound : TMPGenc -> mpeg tools ->simple demux REMUX resulted m2v & mp2 with bbMPEG as SVCD and play . It must get over sound problem Try and give us to know ! Good luck ! :P bman |

So.. I bought a DVD rom and tried to rip my own 704 x 480 pure avi so I could start with a decent quality Sourcefile. B) It's such a popular player. But I'm beginning to wonder myself if that hasn't been the problem all along. I posted a request in the other forum asking Daewoo owners to share their experiences with kvcd and the 5700. If anyone has one, I'd love to hear from you. C) Lowering the resolution is what I had to do with the DivX encodes that I have been burning. And while they play in the proper size, they periodically freeze up and the motion jerks forward to catch up to where it was, and the sound begins to lag momentarily, (out of synch) and then either catches back up to where its supposed to be only to start lagging agin, OR never catches up and ends up a full second or more behind the video by the end. IE, it starts off almost unnoticeable, and then progressively worsens as the movie goes on. D) I'm beginning to resign myself to this conclusion as well. Still I'd like to hear from someone who has one and is willing to test your template just to assure myself that is not me. (Which it most likely is.) I'm going to tie a rope to the rafters in my garage now. Eightball |

The source aspect was set to 4:3 display (at least I think it was) I will try the Full Screen video arrange method on a small clip. Sound : TMPGenc -> mpeg tools ->simple demux WILL TRY THANKS FOR THE TIP. "REMUX resulted m2v & mp2 with bbMPEG as SVCD and play . It must get over sound problem " SORRY I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THIS SENTENCE MEANS. COULD YOU FILL ME IN IN LAYMANS TERMS? Thanks for the help EightBall |
Eightball :
Not being well up on your model of player before actually commiting the MPG to cd, have you tried playing the .mpg through media player or powerdvd to see if you get the same results as previous burns. I have seen this happen when chipset drivers were b0rked, or hard drive caching through the encoding with tmpgenc. whats your motherboard, if its a VIA based board what 4-1 drivers are you using. Just a thought.... |
Eightball, i'm curious, if you have a DVD-ROM, why are you ripping to AVI and then encoding to VCD ? why not just encode directly to the format you want (in this case KVCD), it would save you time.

Have you tried to Re-Mux also with TMPEG tools as SVCD instead of using BBMpeg? kwag |

Again, all Kwags samples I downloaded and burned play perfectly. I dont alter his template. I have wondered if there is something wrong with my latest version of TMPGEnc, or with my computer. Maybe I don't have enough processing power and If I'm doing something else in the background while it encodes for hours on end, maybe the other activity is causing the freezes and synch issues? Or maybe a 5400 rpm harddrive just can't keep up? I see where you are going with the chipset drivers harddrive etc, and there may be something to that as well, here is my info.. I'm nowhere near knowledgeable enough to narrow it down to that. My Motherboard is an: MSI K7T266 Pro-ru MS-6380 Atx Mainboard version 1.0B G52-MA00287 Appollo KT266 VIA chipset consisting of VT8366 Super Northbridge and the VT8233 Southbridge providing PC1600/2100 Double data rate with support for 200/266 front side bus. This is pretty much greek to me, but thats what the manual says. I don't see any info re 4-1 drivers. I'll gladly provide the info if you (or anyone) can tell me where to look for it. Maybe this is relevant (maybe not) My main hard drive is a 6.1 gb drive, my secondary hard drive is a 40 gb drive (5400 rpm) partitioned into 2 drives d and E.. E is 11 gb and is reserved only for this VCD hobby. The programs are on D drive and E is where I put the encoded files, vobs, conversions, etc, prior to finally burning the movie. Thanks to all three of you gentlemen for your time and patience in helping me try to solve this riddle. EightBall |

(1) Remultiplexing - demultiplexing file source into video and audio streams and then multiplexing it back into MPEG-1 file. The feature is that if you have several audio and video streams in a file you can choose the two of them (one video & one audio) you wish to multiplex. (2) Simple demultiplexing - splitting the file source into its basic streams (audio and video). (3) Multiplexing - one video and one audio streams into one MPEG-1 file. Regarding the tweaks, the answer is no  , it won't help you with the problems. kwag |
Eightball, yes, the only thing you need to change in your method, is use the "Save Project" in DVD2AVI instead of "Save AVI", this will make the entire process faster, and you just load the D2V in TMPGEnc as the Video Source, and encode to KVCD as you would before.

I would say your problem is long before you get to the Daewoo eightball, first of all you want your hard drives attaching to the promise Raid/ATA100 contoller on your motherboard if they are not already on there.Keep your hard drives on these controllers - you dont have to raid them they just have faster data access, then put your DVD-rom - writer - cd-roms etc on the standard controller.
then download these drivers, they are the latest 4-1 drivers for O/S's upto and including XP : http://downloads.viaarena.com/drivers/4in1/4in1438(2)v(a).exe Defrag your 40GB harddrive then rip the Vob's using smart ripper 2.41.Do it like this :Rip Method - Movie On the source page highlight the stream processing tab - enable stream processing - then select [0xE0] the main MPG stream and [0x80] the main AC3 stream, all the others deselect. You will not rip all the directors commentarys all the foreign languages and subs this way and cut down on ripping time also. As sefy says use dvd2avi - File > Open > select vts_01_1.vob then add to the last vob in the selection and press ok. then File > save project blabla.DV2 (save it in the same dir as vobs) You must be as offey with Tmpgenc as the rest now :) Use the template and select video source as your blabla.dv2 and audio source as blabla AC3 T01 3_2ch 448Kbps 48KHz.wav i think the problem lies with how your PC has been set up or old motherboard drivers. Worth giving a try though, you never know you maybe surprised ...... My Athlon1.4 KT7A-R 2x30GB fuji's will complete a 90min movie in about 3 to 3.5hrs The P4 1.8 Northwood TH7 II-R 3x60GB D740X will do the same in about about 2.30 to 3 hrs depending on the settings So with your Duron it should not take more than 5-6 or so hrs to complete. PS. When i'm writing, encoding or even ripping i do nothing else on the pc's thats why they encode through the night then switch themselves off ..... multitasking is best left to an O/S that can handle it - something that MicroBloat even now has yet to figured out ... amiga's still Rulezzz :) |
Remux with TMPGenc
Hi kwag Hi to all !
I'm happy if could help! Remux with TMPGenc was the first thing i've tryed !!! AS someone mentioned in this forum only REMUX with - SYSTEM(automatic) - parameter can fix problem for some of the cases. I used that till read at some forum about remux with bbMPEG and since no metter what i'm using just bbMPEG . ALL CREDITS TO THIS GUY ( unfortunately i don't recall his name ) Thank's anyway & I'll be heppy to help anytime !!! bman |
Gentlemen, thank you all very much for these helpful and informative replies. I intend to get to work on all these suggestions in the AM and will report results to each of you here in this thread. I really appreciate the quality and depth of the answers. I know your time is valuable. I'll try not to abuse it. But if other forums provided the conscise, detailed answers that have been provided to me. I think there'd be fewer repetitive questions, and more "pounding-away" on keyboards. Once again, to all 4 of you, Thank you so much.

HI,
This is my first post on this forum. I have tried converting the Starwars series. I use win98 with tmpgenc 2.52. I modified the template to X240 instead of 480, and burn it as VCD using VCD Easy. I have an APEX 703AD which seems to play it fine. some times the dvd player acts wierd, and turning the player off and on again with the vcd as the first disk seems to fix it. There is just a little bit of skipping in the video now and then. I had the problem of Audio going out of synch before KWAG posted the re-Mux workaround. and I tried a different solution. I decompress the audio using the decompress utility that comes with avi2vcd and use that in tmpgenc. the pcm audio encoded file is much larger but seems to get rid of the audio synch problem. I do not know if anyone else has tried it, or if it will work consistently. |
