How to use vobsub filter?
 

I want to use the vobsub filter in Moviestacker 2.0 Beta to add subtitles but am unsure of how to go about it. If I rip them first and put them in a folder then direct the Avisynth script in Moviestacker to that folder it doesn't seem to work. Also, do I need VobSub installed?

I use vobsub. Load vobsub configure>load IFO file of dvd>choose the correct subtitle from list>click ok and it will make a idx and sub file>then you can change colours position of subs etc. I then just use notepad and edit the idx file as required.

I should have mentioned that I'm a bit of a newbie here. So, now I've got a good idea of how to make VobSub work, but then making the script in Moviestacker? I see the new 2.0 Beta has a choice of subtitles (with Vobsub), and that's what I'm trying to set up so as to encode with the subs in place.

You should not need to have VobSub installed. The DLL included with MovieStacker should be enough.
But I recommend that you install the VOBSub pack. It has some nice utilities to deal with subtitles, and MovieStacker uses "subresync" (from VobSub) to configure TEXT subtitles.

MovieStacker BETA1 has a bug that if you install it in a path that has spaces on it (like “C:\Program Files\MovieStacker\”) it will not open the VobSub dialog. To fix it, please download de BTA3 update here.

There is also a bug with TextSub.dll which needs the vsub23.dll to be in the system32 directory. I think this file comes with VobSub pack. So if you do not have VobSub installed or are having problems to use TextSub in MovieStacker, please download THIS (vsub23.zip) file and extract it into the system32 directory.

I'm trying to find why this file is needed... if anyone knows, please PM me. :wink:

There's got to be something (or a lot of things) I'm overlooking here. I installed the new Beta3, put the vsub23.dll in, but when I encode my sample clip in TMPGEnc there are no subtitles.

Maybe here's my problem: I used Subrip to make a .sub file containing all the bmp's of the subtitles. That's the file pointed to in Moviestacker, avisynth script.

I tried to follow Adder in using vobsub configure to load ifo file but could see no way to do that as it seems to only want a .sub file. So I don't see how to make the idx and sub in vobsub configure. Or which vobsub program should I use? Or does vobsub have to be used in VirtualDub??

It's easy to create your sub files with VobSub and MovieStacker.
In the VobSub settings (in MovieStacker) make sure you select Indexed Subtitles and the Subtitle input file edit box is clear. Then press the configure subtitle button. This will open the VobSub configure dialog. Press Open and at file type select Ifo and Vobs, for creating idx/sub.
Now select your IFO file and then the folder you want to create the subs (can be the same folder of your source). That's it! When the process finish you should have the idx/sub in the same folder of your source.
Pressing AUTO in MovieStacker will auto fill the input file edit box.
Now test your script and see if your subtitles are the way you want. You can go back to the VobSub configure dialog and edit the size/position/etc of your subs.

BTW, vsub23.dll is needed just with TextSub filter. VobSub filter do not need it. But surely it will not hurt. :D

Working fine now, after you're excellent directions.

I see that the subtitles appear in the area of the of the movie itself and not below it in the black area of a letterbox format. Is there any way to have subs put in that black area below?

Sure there is...
Pressing the Configure Subtitle button with the Input File edit box filled should open the VobSub configure dialog with your subtitles loaded. Look the red square on the right. This represents your subtitle place. You can drag it down a little bit (or decrease the Y value) to make the subtitle go down. You can also stretch your subtitle with the two sliders on the right.

Right. I found that alignment capability, but it only seems to be able to move to the border of the movie itself and not into the black area below the letterboxed movie. If I move them down past the edge of the movie itself they disappear. I've seen many subtitled movies with subs in that area and am trying to get mine in there.

Okay! Found the answer. It was either because I was using GripFit, or because I had resize checked instead of overlap. Didn't use GripFit and went with overlap, subs right where I want them.

Yep... you were probably placing VobSub filter before GripFit.
This way you placed your subs into the bottom black border but then GripFit cut off the borders and your subs with it. :wink: :mrgreen:

If you want to use GripFit and want the subs on the black border, you have to uncheck the Place VobSub before resizing option in the Subtitle settings dialog. It’s in the bottom left part of the dialog. Doing this, MovieStacker will put the subs after you add the borders and you will be able to move your subs to any where you want. You will have to manually configure (stretch) the size of your subs, because you will be resizing the movie first, and then placing the subs without any resize. :wink:

I get an "error" window popup when I click on the configure subtitle button, says specified module not found. Tryin to encode: "The Longest Day" ....with all the subtitles. Hope this movie is not an exception.
