What are the advantages in mpeg-1 and mpeg-2 which is better for kvcd and why?

The main advantage of MPEG-2 in everyday use is that it supports interlaced video. It's also recommended to use MPEG-2 for high bitrates (talking about DVDs) which probably mean something like >2500 all the time.
For KVCDs, MPEG-1 is better. It produces slightly smaller files with equal quality and MPEG-1 is considered better for low bitrate encodes (<2500 ?). Also TMPGEnc is a very good MPEG-1 encoder, so that's another reason to use MPEG-1 instead of MPEG-2. |

@jshew: That means you don't need to deinterlace the source. You just have to select the correct options in TMPGEnc and it will work fine. With MPEG-1 you just make a mess when not deinterlacing :wink: If the source is progressive, there's no need to deinterlace, of course.
@CheronAph: Sure. You can set it as high as your player allows you to but 2500 is probably enough for all sources. My player doesn't like bitrates higher than ~2600 for video so 2500 or 2300 (depending on the resolution) is the value I use. |

I do a lot of encoding to MPEG2 from interlaced sources. So I'm wondering where I can learn more about the possibility of not having to deinterlace? The right settings in TMPGEnc? Maybe that's where I need to start. |
I think that the only thing you'll need to do in TMPGEnc is to tell the program to encode the video in interlaced format.
