I never had an interlaced source until now, and only encode MPEG 1, so I never really dealt with interlacing.
however I'm pretty sure that you should first de-interlace the source before encoding...
shame on me if I'm wrong :oops:

When encoding an interlaced source to MPEG-1, do I need to do anything specific to "De-interlace" ? (ie: use decomb.dll in the .avs script). Or does it not matter since the final product will be progressive ?

Just use FieldDeinterlace() from the Decomb package. It's a very intelligent deinterlacer and keeps details too.

I once encoded some extras from the Hitchcock collection DVDs to MPEG-1 without deinterlacing them (they were interlaced as most extras seem to be). The result was just horrible. Static scenes were okay but whenever there was any motion at all, lots of artifacts due to the combing that was not removed came up. Not nice at all. So, deinterlace and no more problems :wink:

Hey Boulder,

Those Hitchcock collection episodes should be IVTC'ed :!:
The time when they were filmed, only 16mm and 35mm cameras were available, so they were shot FILM (24fps) :idea:

Thanks, Boulder. I sort of came to the same conclusion myself. I had a very hard time getting my home videos from a Sony DV come out clearly as MPEG-1 KVCD's until I used FieldDeinterlace(). Now they look great!

The extras are probably hybrid as there's some old footage and new interviews too. Although I'm not sure how those should be handled as they are PAL content but originally NTSC. NTSC->PAL conversion and hybrid = pain in the a** :?: Telecide might be able to get some sense but FieldDeinterlace looks good too, no visible jerkiness IMO.
