Can I rely on DVD2AVI Preview Statistics?
 

So when DVD2AVI Preview tells me my video is "Interlaced" can I rely on that? Do I use FieldDeInterlace() for this?

Living in the UK, the DVDs I get are all PAL. DVD2AVI more often than not tells me the source is interlaced but I cannot see any combing effects when previewing. Apart from maybe 1 PAL DVD, I have always assumed progressive despite what DVD2AVI has told me and have had no probs. NTSC sources normally always require IVTC or deinterlacing from my own experience, perhaps others can comment on this too.

Well I only have PAL DVDs too, and always dealt with them, just like you are doing. Haven't had any problems either...

The thing is, I haven't seen an Interlaced DVD yet, ( :oops: ), but I could swear the PAL version of the movie "Event Horizon" shows interlaced lines, when there's lots of action...
any ideas?

Never come across that movie to be honest, but I would either use Bob or FieldDeInterlace as you suggested. One way to check is to load the avs (no filters or resizing) into Virtualdub and scan through the frames. You should be able to notice the interlacing. I have heard of some PAL DVDs being done such that the credits and distribution company logos (i.e. paramaount or 21st century fox) are interlaced but the actual movie is progressive.

If it is interlaced and your destination is 352x288 then there is no need to deinterlace as it will do it naturally at half resolution. Any other res would require deinterlacing before resizing. Hope this helps.

Well guys, for me it's been the other way around. I've almost never seen a progressive PAL DVD. Well I have seen them, but most of the times they're interlaced. I encoded the original japanese version of "The Ring" ("Ringu") without using FieldDeinterlace() and the movie was nearly unwatchable due to interlaced lines all over the place! So, in my experience I would recommend trusting DVD2AVI's preview display :wink: .
