kdvd: some films require lowering resolution to 352x480?

Having experimented with KVCD templates for my Cyberhome500 and Apex600A for months with little success, I've changed to KDVD-Full. All the KVCD's had motion problems, no matter what I tried.

The KDVD template has no motion or blocking problems and is working very well for me. I use Decrypter-DVD2AVI-TMPGEnc and Telecide/Decimate in the optimal AVS script. An average 90-120 minute movie uses between 70-80 CQ. I have been having to set TMPGEnc video at 4:3 and Advanced at 16:9/Set Aspect Ratio2 for 16:9 movies.

I either

mux with BBMPEG as DVD and burn as SVCD with Nero

or,

author with TMPGEnc and burn DVD image on CD with Nero (loads and plays as DVD).

I have found that some films require lowering resolution to 352x480 to fit 2 CD's and stay DVD compatible, but changing KDVD template to 528x480; etc, works on my Cyberhome500 as SVCD, although muxed as DVD.

If anyone else has gone this route and has any pointers, I would really appreciate it. It is kinda neat creating DVD's on CD's, but I am probably overlooking things known by more expert users.

Hey nicksteel,

Lucky you man :!:
I can't play DVD structure on CDs (aka miniDVD) on any of my DVD players :cry:

Have you tried authoring with TMPGEnc or IFOEdit and creating a DVD image to burn with NERO? My only difficulty is in sizing the M2V files (I divide into 2 near equal files with BBMPEG DVD mux, and demux for authoring). The M2V files must max at about 670 in BBMPEG to stay under 700. Somehow it all works, including the chapters. I do have some difficulty with the APEX, but buring a SVCD with a BBMPEG DVD muxed file runs perfectly on it, 720, 528 or 352x480.

Yes, I've tried all of that. I've tried burning with ImgTool or Nero, and my players just doesn't recognize the disk :cry:
What brand is your player :?:

Edit: Never mind, just saw your brand :oops: :P

I'm sure you're aware of this, but in case others want to try, check for minidvd player compatibility here:

http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdplayers.php

(The output looks about the same when burned as SVCD from BBMPEG, but no chapters, etc, of course.)

Which is better?

:?: Is there any quality advantage gained by burning as miniDVD vs SVCD?

Also, (I've asked this question before, but remain confused due to conflicting advice),

When I TMPGEnc the optimal script for a KDVDFULL 16:9 movie,

:?: What VIDEO Aspect ratio should I use?

:?: What ADVANCED Source aspect ratio setting should I use?
:?: What ADVANCED Video arrange Method setting should I use?

When I set VIDEO Aspect ration to 4:3 and ADVANCED Source aspect ration to 16:9 and Video arrange Method to Full screen (keep aspect ratio 2), the picture appears to be right on TMPGEnc screen.

I am using the Optimal script:

LegalClip()

unfilter(50,50)
GripCrop( X, Y )
GripSize(resizer="BicubicResize")
STMedianFilter(8, 32, 0, 0, 8, 32)
# SpaceDust() # Optional - for some "not so clean" DVDs.
temporalsmoother(1,2)
mergechroma(blur(1.50))
mergeluma(blur(0.2))
# Convolution3d or DCTFilter for extreme worse cases.
GripBorders()
LegalClip()

When I set Video arrange Method to Full screen, TMPGEnc shows vertically stretched picture. When I set both VIDEO and ADVANCED to 16:9, TMPGEnc shows vertically compressed picture.

I would really appreciate the specific settings to use in both the AVS file and in TMPGEnc. :) I've always appreciated the aid and advice of the group.

Hi nicksteel,

Make sure that when you use MovieStacker to create your .avs or to verify your movie settings, if the source selects "Anamorphic", then make sure that you check anamorphic on output too. This way, you'll create your MPEG identical aspect to the original. If you're encoding 720x480 16:9, then your output aspect should be set to 16:9.
Most likely, all your encodes should be set to 16:9, unless the DVD that you are backing up is a 4:3. On TMPEG, you leave the the video arrange method set to full screen, and the output aspect ratio set to 16:9.

Thanks, kwag.

:?: What effect does the VIDEO Aspect ratio (first TMPGEnc setting screen) have?

That's what defines your mpeg output aspect, which should be set for 16:9 for DVDs that are anamorphic or 16:9.
