Mainconcept settings?

I like the idea of using the mainconcept encoder as it is very fast and has lots of cool settings to play with   ...
Kwag (and also the others), what would be your optimal settings for the last version of the encoder? I already use the Notch Matrix, but the GOP still gives me some problems...

I am using the optimal 2.5x script and it works flawlessly! :D

BTW:
Isn't there a "Other MPEG Encoders" Forum?

Hi Razorblade2000,

You can use MCE with the KVCD matrix, and it should work fine. But remember that it only works correctly at 352x240(288). In higher resolutions, the encoder can't maintain proper high (MAX) bitrate. If your average is say ~800Kbps, no matter how fast the action on the movie is, it won't go beyond 1,500-1,600Kbps. Even if you set the MAX to 3,000Kbps. So on action scenes, they are all blocky :(

ATM I am encoding Final Fantasy (source:DVD) @ 352x576
Avg 1250
MPEG 2
--> I'll make a MiniDVD (2 AC3 Audio streams + selectable subtitles)
my preview looked pretty fine

My Problem is, that I couldn't figure out how to set the GOP
I personally think, that there is A LOT more to tweak than in TMPGEnc
(I actually don't know what most of it means or how to set it up for max performance)

Wouldn't this be a better app for making KDVDs??? MPEG2 is pretty damn fast!

Couldn't you (please) install this encoder once more and make 1 Template??? Needn't be perfect... but at the moment I think I could get much more out of the Application by setting some more things which could be obvious to you (or another person who knows as much as you about video compression)

WOW!!!
At least with MPEG2 he REALLY does VBR!!! Very different Bitrate Allocation from scene to scene!

kwag 07-10-2003 03:11 AM

I'm sure your results are WOW :)
I pretty sure MCE is better than CCE in high bitrate MPEG-2

They were very nice!

But could you please give me some adive on how to set up the GOP (I cant use the 1,24... params as I don not have enough fields to enter them...and in those I have, the option 1-24-...doesn't exist)? And maybe there are other things to change, that seem to be clear to you but I don't see em? :D

You need to set the size of the GOP to 24 frames. It's not like the way you see it in TMPEG.
I tried it in MCE, but it keeps forcing it to a lower GOP :?
The big difference is really on the matrix. Not the GOP. So if you can't change the GOP, just change the matrix.

You actually can get long gops...
But he inserts B Frames based on the I and P Frame Values...
At the moment I use 15 I Frames and 3 P Frames which results in sth like this:
"BBIBBPBBPBBPBBP..." (he calls this a "structure example")

I use this because it was quite Similar to my TMPGEnc GOP
(IBBPBBPBBPBBPBBPBBPBBPBBPBBPBBPBBPBBPBBPBBPB...)

Isn't it?

There are so much more values to be configured than in TMPGEnc... I guess I'll have to leave most of em on the default values :(

kwag 07-10-2003 03:22 PM

The idea is to get one I frame per group. So the maximum size in the GOP would look like this:

IBBPBBPBBPBBPBBPBBPBBPBB  Next GOP IBBPBBPBBPBBPBBPBBPBBPBB etc.

I HAVE got 1 I Frame... but somehow it is after 2 b Frames...

will this screw up my encoded video? (its quality)

As long as it's one I frame per GOP, you're fine :)
