KVCD: Combining VOBs with Vobedit creates A/V sync problems ?
 

I am trying to convert an anime dvd which has 6 episodes on the one disk to vcd. Each of these episodes has a diff VTS(if that is the correct term ie: VTS_01_01,VTS_01_02 for one episode and then VTS_02_01 etc for next and so on), so i am ripping each one at a time, then taking vobedit and combining them into one VTS(using the Join Clips function), then creating an ifo for them using ifoedit. As stated in the steps of the guides mentioned here.

Everything works ok but in final playback there is serious audio sync issues from the start of the 2nd episode the 1st one plays fine, I checked the video and sound with sound forge and vegas video, it seems that there have been frames dropped. Does anyone know if this is caused by dvd decryptor(ripping using stream processing) or vobedit when i join the vobs together? Or is there something i need to do that i havent? maybe a different program to use?

Quick suggestion: Use DVDShrink to select each episode individually, and make a No Compression "backup", to a different directory for each episode. Then create your .d2v project for each, and encode them individually :)

As Kwag said, a simple way to solve your audio problem would be to not join all the vobs together before encoding. This is the method I use after ripping each episode from an episodic-dvd seperately with dvd-decrypter in ifo mode:

Load up all of your vobs in dvd2avi by using the 'Add' button and create 1 large project file containing all of your episodes (note: do not do a full encode this way because it will very likely give you sync problems). Then run prediction using that large .d2v. When you find your target CQ level for that large .d2v, then you just create seperate .d2v files for each of your episodes and encode each episode seperately at that CQ level you previously found. (hint: using Batch Encoding in TMPG makes encoding multiple files much easier).

Then when you go to burn, just make sure to set the gap between the tracks on your KVCD to zero seconds, and that way all of your episodes should still play seamlessly, as if they were actually combined into 1 large track.

Not only is it probably easier this way, but then you also have the added benefit of being able to hit the "skip/next/chapter/etc" button on your remote control and jumping right to the next episode on your disc. :)

But if you really want to have all your episodes combined into 1 big track for some reason, then you could also try encoding each episode seperately and then combining them with TMPG's Merge/Cut tool afterwards, or perhaps the HJSplit utility (these methods may possibly lead to sync issues though as well :roll: ). I'm sure there are also probably ways of achieving what you're asking about through your avisynth script as well, but someone more experienced than me will need to help you for that :oops: :lol: . :wink:

2 reasons why i wanted to combine the episodes were so i could do the conversion in one hit that way allocation of bitrate is more accurately given across the encode(i think? :roll: ) and encoding subtitles in one hit also with one .idx file etc

However the DVD2AVI idea sounds like a really good one i wonder why i never thought of it before :lol:

And ill have to give DVDShrink a try out while im at it.

Ill encode seperately and leave the vobedit problem for another day :) now that ive been given a alternate method (I love this forum)
