KVCD will not play in my dvd player?

Hi everyone,

I am new to kvcd and try to make my first kvcd. However, I have encountered some audio problems. My source file is a divx.avi. As per virtual dub, the video is in divx and the audio is in 48000 Hz, 2 channels (stereo), fraunhofer IIs Mpeg layer 3 codec, and 127 kbps. I followed the guide wrote by black prince. I extracted the audio stream from vitural dub and converted the .wav file to mp2 by using settings 44100 Hz, surround2, dual channel, and 128kbps. I encoded the video stream by using moviestacker and tmpeg. I multiplexed the mp2 with m1v to mpeg1. Then I burned it by using nero as vcd. The vcd played fine on my computer. However, it wouldn't play by my dvd player (apex 1500). The video is fine in my dvd player but the audio is messed up in "stereo" mode (the audio sounds unclear and overlap) When I changed the dvd player setting to either Mono left mode or Mono right mode, the audio played fine. How come? :x

Can someone help me please? TIA!!

Your player seems to misunderstand dual chanels audio track.

Redo your audio but in stereo this time insteed of dual chanels.

I tried Kwag's kvcd sample disc. My dvd player played them fine. And I remembered that the audio track of the sample disc is encoded in surround2, dual channel, and 112 kbps.

I also tried to redo the audio as stereo instead of dual channels. Same problem though. :(

It seems that my dvd player (apex 1500) is capable to play the dual channel audio. How come it cannot play my vcd? :?:

I am using WinXP Pro. I used Headac3he to convert the audio and I used bbmpeg to multiplex the vcd. Don't know if this info is going to help.

Any idea?

And what are you starting from ? DVD ? Other ?

strider_k 08-18-2003 08:08 PM

from divx format to kvcd.

kwag 08-18-2003 08:20 PM

That's part of the problem

For sure, you already said it in your first post, sorry ;-).

I never had any problem with MP3 VBR like you have as source. But as Kwag said that is possibiliy a part of the problem.

Just do an other movie and see if the result is the same. Your problem is perhaps simply in the source :!:

strider_k 08-19-2003 12:53 AM

That's okay, Dialhot.

I just tried another one as you suggested. It is also in divx format but the audio is in CBR, as opposed to the first one which is a VBR MP3. This one worked now. :o :)

Any suggestion to encode the movie if the audio is in MP3 VBR format?

Thanks again.

As I told you there is no problem with a VBR MP3 as long as you use a temporaly uncompressed xav (that means a file a hundreds of MB).

Be sure that you uncompress the wav when you extract it. If you do a simple "direct copy", even if you have a "wav" extension, the file in in fact in MP3 VBR (no transformation is done during a "direct copy"). You can see that with the length of the file : a 400 MB uncompressed wav file is equivalent to a 30 MB MP3 at 128 Kbps.

Thanks. I will check it and see what happen.

Once I had a VBRMP3 too. I encoded it directly in TMPGenc using toolame and SSRC. This will work wonderfull!

I have a music cd that apparently has VBR MP3 files. What is best method to extract into wave files? A little off the subject, but the above postings "rung a bell".

Doing this or extracting the wav and use Besweet is EXACTLY the same thing : tmpgenc first extracts the wav before sending it to SSRC and toolame. And Besweet use SSRC and toolame also to do its job.

I use Goldwave. It deflashes avi's into uncompressed .wav by default. This should work on your VBR mp3's Nicksteel.

So, based on what I'm reading, you guys think the AC3 or integral MP3 found in most Divx sources can make certain players glitch? My buddu's RCA player has a problem with KVCD audio, so this seems really familiar.

I thought Headac3he solved this problem by converting sources to CBR... If so, would deflashing the AVI to an uncompressed WAV, and saving the raw uncompressed audio (I've been converting to 44.1khz 320kbps Stereo MP3) really make a difference? Could Goldwave's MP3 compression cause the problem? Seems unlikely, unless I'm missing something (pretty good chance of that)...

I guess what I'm asking is, has this happened to anybody here already?

That's my preferred method too. It works great for multiple .avi's too because you can just copy and paste the second file to the first and save the .wav

Dialhot 08-20-2003 05:41 PM

Besweet can handle avi as source also :!:

Reno 08-20-2003 06:36 PM

Hey Dialhot, have you used both? If so, which one is faster? I hate waiting for those things to open, and saving it to .mp3 (which I probably will avoid now) takes forever!

Dialhot 08-20-2003 07:49 PM

4 minutes to convert (with 2pass as I normalize the output) a 42 minutes long avi sound on my 1.3GHz P4, I don't find this too long.

And I love batch mode of besweetGui !

Bubububummmmp!

Thought I'd chime in with some info. Since switching from opening the source in Goldwave and re-compressing it into mp3 for Headac3he to chew on, the audio problem in my friend's DVD player disappeared! Yay!

Now, I just open it, (in Goldwave still) and save to 16 bit stereo .wav before Headac3he conversion. Guess this type of audio process is more readable/compatible. Hope that helps somebody!! :D

Thanks again guys!

But as you probably know : you loose a lot during the operation ! Is like compressing in KVCD an already compressed SVCD.

That's the way to do this.

Note: did you try to use Besweet and put directly the avi as source ?
