KDVD Half D1 - Not Compatible?

I have been trying to create files using the KDVD Half D1 template for authoring to a simple DVD.

I have been able to create files using the KDVD Full D1 template, add the files to a project in TMPGEnc DVD Author and then burn to DVD-R & DVD+RW without any problems.

When I use one of the KDVD Half D1 files it will play enough so I can see the content but there are green blocks all over and severe studdering. This is something I have seen on MPEG2 files authored to VCD on this type of player.

I am playing the DVD on a Sony NC665P. Unfortunately the only other players I have available for testing are two Sony NC615Bs. (Yes... I like the Sony DVD changers).

Has anyone seen problems with the KDVD Half D1 template? 8O I have had even LESS luck trying to get an MPEG1 file authored to DVD. (I am aware of the fixed bit rate and low resolution necessary). This is really just testing what is possible before I start making decisions on how to do things.

The bottom line is that I am looking for a smaller file size option than KDVD Full D1 that will be compatable when authored to DVD. 8)

This DVD burner is just taking up more time. It was more fun and easier to just make KVCDs and wish I had a DVD burner. 8O

If that was not enough to ponder... is there any type of MEGA VCD format available using DVD media? I saw another post about someone writing to DVD-R using a CD-RW and in effect making a very large VCD. That is not technologically possible given how the media, laser and various formats are related but it would be possible to write a large VCD on DVD media using a DVD burner... if a defined format existed?

Even with the hassles... I love this DVD burner (NEC 1300A). It is still under $175 at NewEgg.

Hi Grantman,

Could it be that your DVD player is not so compatible on DVD Half D-1 resolution :?:
Because KDVD Half D-1 is as compatible as a standard DVD Half D-1 MPEG-2 file :!:

Half-D1 is one of the resolutions in the DVD Standard, so it should play in every player. Try using DVDLab (they offer a 30-day trial) and authoring your project as Half-D1 or as Full-D1 (using Half-D1 files) to see if it helps.

That's terrible. I guess these manufactures could be sued for selling something that is not what it promisses. I don't know how it is in your country, but here in Brazil we have PROCON to take care of this. A DVD Player is requeried to play all the resolutions in the DVD Spec. If they gave you less than that, that means that they sould something that cannot be called a DVD Player (or maybe a half-DVD player), so they legally cheated on you. I would complain to the company, and if they do nothing, I would sue them for selling a fake DVD player. A true DVD player is required to play all the DVD Spec and that's it.

Jorel,

I guess you missed the point my friend. Here we are talking about full-compilant DVDs using the 352x480 resolution which is part of DVD-Forum Standard. This reminds me of the case when I guy sued Sony for releasing Tribalistas CD with a protection scheme that made the CD not play on cars CD players. His allegations where that he had a CD-player, a full compilant CD player, and that so-called CD could be played in his player car because of the way it was made, so threfore that wasn't really a CD and Sony was selling something that was not what it promisses. He won the case and Sony had to pay 1000 reais (about US$ 300) and give him a "normal" Tribalistas CD.
We are talking basically about the same thing. Our friend BlueBeard has a full-compilant DVD disc, within DVD-Forum specification, and he can't play on this machine that toshiba calls a DVD-Player. A DVD-Player must play everything that is on DVD specification by DVDForum, because that's what specifications are for. Otherwise somebody could create a player that only plays 352x240 resolution, and call that a DVD Player. Sorry to inform you, Blue Beard, but this machine you got is not a DVD-Player (maybe a "Full-D1-only-DVD-Player"), and I think you should inform Toshiba about this, and if they don't care, you definatelly can sue them.

more little details about this new semp:
don't want to play harry potter.
some dvds don't play or show in the panel:
"no disc"....
don't need to say about the procon,
they can't solve this problems...
"DVD-Forum Standard" don't work in all cases for this model!
ps:
i worked in semp toshibe 8 years!
the new lg don't play 352x480 too.

Well, in all fairness to Toshiba, this is a second-hand unit picked up at a garage sale for little more than pocket change. Who knows what abuse it was put through by it's previous owner(s).

As it stands, vmesquita, I can't see myself raising hell over the issue. Now, if I had purchased it brand new 8O .....that might be a different story

But this is terrible, how can a company manufacture DVD Players that don't play full compilant DVDs. It's good to know that because I'll give this info to people every time I am asked. Like I said, Toshiba and LG are then making not DVD Players, but "FullD1-DVD Players".

But of course if I had a second hand player with this problem I would not bother. But if I bought it brand-new in a store, I would definatelly "raise hell" about it!  This is what I call cheating on the consumer!!
