Shrinking two KVCDs to one with DVDShrink?
So I've as always a crasy idea!
I'm starting today shrinking an encoded KVCD 50% so I can put it with another one on one CD. I'll write a guide if it works and I can still see something  |
I already did it .... long time ago, started with standard SVCDs.
This idea was already treated in forum.doom9.de @ All Quality was worse as if you directly encode your stream with a CQ which fits to the final size you want, no matter if the stream is encoded using standard SVCD template, KVCD or other. My experience with dvd shrink is, that its a "defcon5" tool, just to decrease the filesize about 5%. If you treat it with values over 5-10% you will receive a bigger amount of bad Quality as if you directly encode using the CQ "right" way. Here a quote from "duartix" @ doom9.org which explains the "basics" of such transcoders as DVDShrink or DVD2One: Quote:

DVDShrink 3 has variable compression, though. I transcoded THE FELLOWSHIP with Nero Recode, IC7, Shrink 2 and Shrink 3 and Shrink 3 was WAY better than v2 (using deep analysis). Of course Nero Recode was best, but Shrink has improved. It can compete with IC7. It's different though because it tends to produce macroblocks, whilst IC7 produces mosquito noise.
I find transcoded movies VERY watchable up to 30-40% compression. Did Matrix 1 and I can't see the difference to the source. |
Well lets see, and lets push the limits of our compressions 8)
One day we will carry our Movies on a USB Memory Stick, .... it only will take time to find a way to do it! :D |

Do you have a TMPGenc template for converting to PocketPC resolutions? Thanks, Icarus |

Just set the resolution on the ULBR to the resolution on the Pocket PC. My encode was 320x176 for a wide screen movie. Also, you should encode the audio at 64Kbps with HeadAC3he, and use "Joint Stereo". Change the MIN bitrate to 0, and set the MAX to 256Kbps. You're all set: Here's a sample, done with one of the old template, way before KVCD's "Notch" matrix. So you can now expect better quality than this ;) http://www.kvcd.net/matrix-ppc.m1v.mpg PLEASE, view it on WMP at it's default resolution. Don't try to zoom, because it will look crappy. It looks really fine at it's encoded resolution of 320x176, and that's the way it will look on a Pocket PC :D -kwag |
recode should be best? So I'll try it...
Edit: I looked at Recode of Nero. For the first view it looks like DVDShrink, but with priority options??? |

I don't actually own a pocket PC, but am looking for a template for sending home videos of my kids to the grandparents via e-mail. To date I have been converting via windows media, by I would like to try a low res KVCD conversion to compare quality. Thanks, Icarus |
Hey Icarus3000,
I'm pretty sure you'll like the quality better than the WM counterpart  -kwag |
