Blocks in dark scenes?

I would really like to know how the sample (city-hall.mpeg) download from the main page was created. I have done a few movies with original KVCDx2 template (source is VOB files ripped from DVD). I can see blocks in dark sence, especially those "out-focus" background and under water scene. I have tried to vary the P and B from 0/20 to 0/0, still see block.

I use smartripper, DVD2AVI, FitCD, Virtualdub, and Tmpeg. Thanks

There was no special science in that clip :)
The source was IVTC'ed and encoded with the KVCD 352x480 NTSC template ( not the X2 ) without any modifications.
Verify that you have checked "Output YUV data as Basic YCbCr and CCIR601" in TMPEG's advanced settings.

Kwag,
Thanks for your hint. What is "Demacrovision" in Smartripper all about? some guide says it should be checked (Sefys says so) and some says it should not. Will this option make any difference in the final KVCD output??

hey KWAG,

i remember talking to you about this in the past. i thought we came to the conclusion that this makes the video untrue or whatever. are you using a PC or TV scale under the video options in DVD2AVI? i know this makes the blacks definately black, but wont it make the picture too dark?

... nevermind, the issue was never closed: http://www.kvcd.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=88&highlight=

im really confused now. :?

It really depends on the source. If the source is already CCIR601 ( as in DVD's ), you check this option. If not, it's better to leave it off. Just remember that the colors and brightness levels will look different in a PC than in your TV set with this option set.
