Bitrates: Filesize way too big?

Ok I tried CQMatic and Calcumatic today for the first time  ...
Movie was PAL and Fullscreen, and 114 minutes long. Unfortunately the file came out 50 mb too big...
Now I didn't use that Average Bitrate x .57 as Minimum bitrate (does that make a difference for prediction ?? ) other than that I cannot think of anything why it DID not work...

Yes, it does !

Ok so you're actually supposed to :

1. Open your source in Calcumatic and let it calculate your Average Bitrate x .57.

2. Put that value as Minimum Bitrate in TMPGEnc and save it as .tpr Text Project.

3. Open that project in CQMatic

Is that what you have to do? Do I have to use such a high Min. Bitrate to be able to work with the software?

Hi Jellygoose,

The 0.57 * Average is to help with TMPEGs (un)linearity while predicting.
All your steps are correct.

Alright I'll give it another try :D

Hi Jellygoose just to put my 2 cents in here i did a movie about a week ago and it was 50 mbs too big and then i adjust the min bitrate to *57 of the average and it was almost dead on.

The movie was ntsc but i think the *57 is a lot more accurate.

Jellygoose 09-12-2003 03:30 AM

Well the only problem I see is that you loose a lot of space with such a high min. bitrate (in my case 610kb).
What about that option in TMPGEnc "Enable padding not to be lower than minimum bitrate" ? You leave it checked?

jorel 09-12-2003 06:38 AM

yes Jell, use it checked!

you are right about "loose a lot of space with such a high min."
i wrote it a month ago somewhere here...(nobody listen to me). :(

but i use min300 and max2500 for skvcd and
don't use the min bitrate to *57 of the average!
the final size is small!

Lol. For your information I never stop to use 64-2300 as I always did even if I recommand to others to follow Kwag advices :-)

Wolfi 09-12-2003 07:45 AM

Some of you tells that you should use Average Bitrate x .57 and then put that value as min. bitrate in TMPGEnc (my case 672.7 as min. bitrate) and someone is saying that you should use min. bitrate 300. What is right 8O :?:

The only thing right is that if you want to benefit of all the accuracy of CQMatic, you have to use the *.57 value.

If, as Jorel or I do, you use other values, don't blame CQMatic if your file is far to the target size.

jorel 09-12-2003 07:58 AM

hey Wolfi,
i don't know what is right but nobody is wrong!
got it?

see how i do for skvcd (480x480):
min 300, max 2500,
then in CalcuMatic i adjust the audio to 96 bitrate(only for prediction),
got the average bitrate(not the 0.57)!
use CQMatic1.2.00 and put the bitrate to got the prediction!
...encode.....
in the end,
you will encode the audio as 128(maybe more)
with the video for good final size!

Wolfi 09-12-2003 08:34 AM

Okoj NOT the 0.57! I get now :) I'll give it a try now :!:
