encoding audio with Headac3he

@Kwag,

I'm using this method now too, and the results are awesome. IMO this is a HUGE improvement! I'm now re-encoding the audio for Black Hawk Down and I can't wait to check it out.

Can the AC3 file be dumuxed with earlier ver of DVD2AVI or just the latest release? Also can this method be used with .AVI captures?

thanks a lot,
ren

Hi Ren:

The AC3 can be demuxed with ver 1.76 of DVD2AVI. It just extracts the file from the DVD to your HDD. Then headac3he does the magic 8)
For AVI captures, 8O , haven't tried that! I don't think a captured AVI can have embedded AC3 audio.

audio+video always out of sync

although the sound is great- the audio is always a little ahead of the video. I've tried different movies with different templates and the result is always the same. It seems like DVD2AVI is calculating the wrong delay or something. Also its in sync when I play it on the computer. I'm completely stumped.

kwag 07-05-2002 02:59 PM

That's 8O weird ren. If it plays in sync in the PC, but not in your standalone, it seems like a mux problem. How did you mux your video/audio files?

hi Kwag,

I simple-multiplexed in tmpgenc as mpeg1 non-standard. The sync problem is weird because it's not consistent at all. it starts in sync then there's delay- on another disc, the audio is ahead of video. I'm encoding "Black Hawk Down" for the fourth time :D using avisynth IVTC procedure instead of FF in dvd2avi to see if that has anything to do with it.

Also there is a very slight chance that when I encoded the video only, I might have had mpeg1 system checked- I don't know if I made this mistake but could this cause the problem?

thx
ren

kwag 07-05-2002 03:31 PM

If you had MPEG-1 system instead of MPEG-1 Video CD ( non-standard ), yes!, that could have been the problem.

rendalunit 07-06-2002 02:30 PM

maybe need a new receiver

I've made about a dozen coasters of "Black Hawk Down"- everyone, the audio is out of sync but they play fine on my computer- so I've come to this conclusion: my old JVC pro-logic receiver is having trouble decoding the audio which I encoded at the highest bitrate Headac3he would allow.

Is this a plausible explanation Kwag?
I'm grasping at straws here :D

rendalunit 07-06-2002 03:39 PM

WOO HOO!!!!! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

I just tested my kvcds on a newer sony 5.1 receiver and audio+video completely in sync and unbelievable sound.

Now I'm going to dump my JVC RX-717V which I purchased many moons ago and go shopping :D

I bought an RCA RT2280 a couple of weeks ago, and we're having a ball with surround sound too!

hey guys,

im using besweet to encode my demuxed ac3 to 128/48 mp2. will i acheive better quality audio or is it the same? does headac3he use azid and toolame? im so used to besweet, id rather not change.

headAC3he uses azid just like Besweet but uses mp2enc to encode the audio. I like it better than Besweet. It's faster. And headAC3he has the surround 2 mode that I believe Besweet doesn't have.

OK Guys,

I've now done the same thing, using HeadAC3e to encode my audio and keep the surround info, but a few questions.

Do I have to mux the audio & video back together before I plop them into DVD Moviefactory or Workshop ?? I've done this and it seems to work.

But, I sort of remember reading somewhere that I could keep them seperate and if they were named properly, loading the video portion into the authoring package would cause the audio to be automatically muxed in when the image gets created.

Is this true? If so, what do I have to do ?

Or, have I just been spending too much time experimenting with Vanilla Coke and Rum ???

Thanks

rendalunit 07-08-2002 01:41 PM

ok here is EXACTLY what was causing my audio/video sync problem:

1. loaded .avs video source in tmpgenc
2. selected output file name
3. set stream type to video only
4. loaded KVCD template <<<<<< template would automatically change stream type setting to SYSTEM (VIDEO+AUDIO)
5. then I began encoding not knowing that the stream type had changed

I think in this case, the template should be loaded FIRST

kwag 07-08-2002 04:13 PM

I just do this:

1. Load the .avs file.
2. Load the template to be used.
3. Click under Stream type "Video Only"
4. Make any adjustments, output file name, etc. ( if necessary ).

Encode......!

my endless weird audio problem

I keep jumping the gun thinking the problem is solved but it's not and it's driving me nuts!

here's the problem: the audio is a lower pitch (male voices sound similar to Andre the Giant) and it is delayed --but the damn cd plays fine in my computer! My player is a Sony DVP-NC600. dvds play fine. What could possibly cause this? i've tried muxing with BBmpeg and TMPGenc both exact same results.

what's going on here?

AHAAAAA!, that bit me about a week ago too
You forgot to check "Resample to: 44.1 Khz" in headAC3he HehEHEHE

AC3 or WAV, which is the best source for headAC3he?

The question is the same as the subject. If AC3 is the one, what is the set up in DVD2AVI (v1.76) to extract a AC3 file instead of WAV file? The following is my working flow:

Smartripper-->DVD2AVI(v1.76)-->FitCD-->VirtualDub(adding subtitle)-->Tmpeg.

This is for Kwag or other volunteers, the NEW template's source aspect ratio is set to 1:1 VGA, did you do it on purpose? Previous templates were set to 4:3 NTSC (704x480), what's purpose of this change? Thanks.

So that you choose the correct aspect ratio you need, depending on your source :D
Actually, if you use an .avs script, you can leave it at 1:1. AviSynth will take care of the correct resizing, and your output will be correct.
For AC3 in DVD2AVI, you choose 'Demux" instead of "Decode". The AC3 file will be extracted by DVD2AVI. This is the file you process with headAC3he. Use the same procedure you're using, Smartripper-->DVD2AVI(v1.76)-->FitCD-->VirtualDub(adding subtitle)-->Tmpeg, and after that, encode your AC3 audio file with headAC3he and mux the video/audio with BBmpeg. You'll have a prefect KVCD with Dolby Surround and perfect lip sync audio!.

Surround or Surround 2 in HeadAC3he?

Is it normal to take an hour to convert AC3 file to MP2 (PIII-800). Also, under the Option button and under "downmix type" should I select surround or surround 2. For "Channel Mode", I believe I have to select "dual channel", right? What about the "PsyModel"?

You forgot to check "Resample to: 44.1 Khz" in headAC3he HehEHEHE

I haven't been checking that, do I need to? I thought we wanted 48 instead of 44.1. I haven't had any problems with the sound by not checking "resample".

syk2c11 07-10-2002 12:00 PM

If I want to cut the "intro" at the beginning of the movie and cut those ending credits, can I set the range at Tmpeg when encoding the video stream or I have to encode the ENTIRE movie in Tmpeg and set the range at bbMpeg. I don't want my final Mpeg file out of sync. Thanks a lot again!

You can set the range in DVD2AVI before you do anything else if you don't want credits and stuff

For a P-III 800, yes. That's about the right time
On my P4 @1.6Ghz it's about 30-35 minutes.
Choose "surround 2" and I set "dual channel" instead of "stereo".
Everything else I leave as default.
Don't forget to check the "Resample to: 44.1 Khz".

In this case, you would have to encode the complete movie to keep everything in sync. But then, in BBmpeg, you would chose the start seconds and end seconds that you want your movie to be, and the muxed file would be "bracketed" to what you want. Ex: without intro and end credits.

I tried that once, when I used to output WAV instead of AC3, and the audio was then out of sync with the movie. I haven't tried that with demuxing the AC3. If it works, that would be great!. Another experiment to try

I accidentally found that out when I used DVD2AVI to cut the end and output to ac3. I was running a test on your new template to video only and encode only the first 30 min of the movie. I wanted to see the result so I went ahead and remuxed with BBMpeg using the full audio file and the shorted video file. I figured the sound would be screwed up but I wanted to test it in WinDVD as an mpg. The sound was in sync! Try it and see if it works for you.

in the 1st options, under channel configuration, do you choose 2ch or 4ch or 6ch? im assuming 2ch...

wont work

Hey anybody out there

I have tried to use headac3he, but the program shuts itself down unless i take the libmmd.dll file out of the folder in which headac3he is contained in. Then i get this error that i cannot create a mp2 file. I place the dll back in the folder and the program works until about half way through and says the program has generated errors and needs to be restarted as with above. I am running on a athlon 1.0 gig with 2000 pro and i downloaded the first and second set of .dlls on the website yet i continue to have these errors. Frustrating , can anyone help me with this problem thanks

Try downloading the MMX version of the dll's. It could be a bug on the Athlon dll's.
