KDVD: 704x480 vs Half D1 using cce?
has anyone had experience encoding at half d1 resolution using CCE? My encodes at 720x480 come out beautifully but if I change it to 704x480, I get huge blockiness in my encodes. No problem with tmpgenc though. However as I have just delved into the world of KDVD, I have only tested it on one source and it was an xvid file.
Also, after my one successful encode using CCE, I used DVD-lab as per the nice guide here The only thing is when I added my mpv file to the assets window, it said my file was encoded at 23.976fps and it needs to be set to 29.976fps, so it has to create another mpv file with "pulldown". Not too sure what that means. But is there any way to get around this in the first place? It just seemed like an extra waste of space. Also, what are some recommended DVD burning programs? I didn't like the one in DVD-lab for long movies, because it doesn't tell you much about the progress of the writing operation. Instead I used Nero 5.5. oh and for my first test, I used cce using the downloaded template, but changed Q to 17 and max bitrate to 9000. My final mpv file was 2.4Gb, so hopefully once I learn prediction I could fit 2 movies easily on a dvdr. can't wait to learn more about the wonders of kdvd! |
Oh, one other question. If my source has ac3 sound at 384kbps, is it worth it to reencode at a lower bitrate? If so, what would be recommended to preserve the quality, 192? And would you use ac3machine to do that? Thanks!

J-Wo my friend
i read in another thread that you got a new dvd burner.....great! i don't have a dvd burner but i see many people with fantastics results using the vmesquita guide! is complete with links and big explanations. take a look: http://www.kvcd.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5142 :) |
J-Wo,
Welcome to the DVD world! I have been using 720x480 for a while and recently I moved to 704x480, with no problems at all. Wouldn't the problem be your source? Did you try the optimal script for XVid? Pulldown is necessay to enable a pulldown flag in your file so your standalone will make 29.97 frames out of 23.976 in realtime during playback. You can let DVDLab do it or use pulldown.exe to do the job. Don't burn DVDs with Nero, some versions have bugs in DVD burning and nobody is exactly sure what are. Create a image using ImageTools Classic and Burn using DVDDecrypter. If you don't want to spend time creating a image, you can try burn using Prassi Primo, I never tried but I don't remember anyone having problems with this one. I guess my guide can help you a lot with this process, since it's main goal is do DVD/DivX to KDVD. Prediction is fully explained there and I also did a stand-alone calculator to avoid manual calculus. If your AC3 is 5.1, I guess it's better keep it at 384 kbps. You can use the free AC3Machine (which is a frontend for BeSweet and has problems with Pioneer players) or SoftEncode by Sonic Foundry (which has no compatibility problems but is much slower). I prefer SoftEEncode. You can use Q up to ~30 and still get very good results, enabling you to get about 6 hours of widescreen footage (encoded at 4:3) in one disc. When you get experienced, you might want to use VMesquitaTools to automate the process. Good luck! :D []'s VMesquita |

When encoding 16:9 at 4:3, you'll have the same picture in a 4:3 TV, but of course extra compatibility. On a widescreen TV, you'll also be able to see your encodes in the right aspect ratio using the Zoom function most widescreen TV sets have. But in this case the movie will look better if encoded ad 16:9 aspect ratio.

Is there a way to make KVDVDs so that they will look equally as good on a 4:3 tv AND a 16:9 tv? I'm thinking of my original source DVDs, which don't require a zoom feature on widescreen TVs nor do they look oddly stretched on 4:3 TVs. |
J-wo,
If you encode at 4:3 (or at 16:9), you have to put this settings in both CCE and gripcrop destination. To make widescreen DVDs that don't require aspect ratio "tweaking", you have to use souce and destination anamorphic in gripcrop, and 16:9 in CCE. This way your DVDs will be automatic letterboxed in 4:3 TV and shown with the correct aspect ratio in widescreen TVs (provided that both DVDs are adjusted right, which probably they are) []'s VMesquita |
My Questions is: just HOW LONG or how many hours does it take to encode an average full screen movie using the full D1 KVCD 720x480 template ???
|
Using CCE it takes about 8 hours with the latest DivX script to convert 6 hours of widescreen video to KDVD 720x480. If I remember correctly, time is about the same for DVD sources with MA script. I have a Atlhon 2000+. But this values are for widescreen movies, full-screens stuff should take about twice the time.
