Guidelines for choosing resolution?
Hey guys, I'm new to kvcd, but so far it is a dream come true. No more 2 or 3 disc movies! Thank God! Anyway here is my question: How do I select the best resolution template in relation to my source. Are there general rules of thumb when choosing like perhaps source resolution or maybe resulting CQ value after prediction for a chosen output resolution? I'm sure this has been asked but I can't seem to find it in any of the guides or by searching the forum. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the reply. I looked through the guides but none seem to address a deciding factor in choosing the resolution template for your encoding. I hope you can shed some light on this for me. Thanks again!

Hi magnus,
First, try 528x480 (kvcdx3), do file size prediction, and playback your sample to preview the quality. If you're happy with the quality: "Do not pass go, do not collect $200.00" and encode your movie. Case closed. If quality is so so, then lower your resolution to 352x480, and run prediction again. Most probably, you'll have excelent quality 90% of the times at 528x480, and fallback to 352x480 if it's a very active (or long) movie, where 528x480 just takes up too much bitrate for a descent quality. -kwag |

Thanks but unfortunately 528x480 is the only template my player won't accept.

Thanks, I'll try it. So you guys feel this is the best all around resolution unless you have to drop to 352x240 or 352x480?
|
try this
u could try going for a resolution which gives you a CQ of 60 or more (in tok). that's how i do it anyway :) start with 544x480 or 528x480 and lower your res if it's below 60.
oh yea don't forget 480x480, but that's standard svcd resolution ;) |
Thanks Zes, that's a good rule of thumb to keep in mind.
