small sample size?
 

hey all, im in the process of making my first KDVD, thanks to vmesquita guide.

anyways, im trying to encode 3 PAL anime dvds, each 100 mins. Using vmesquita calculator i got a sample size of 32.07mb...using Sample(length = 12) @ CQ 70 (using tmpg KDVD full d1) , i got a 12mb file, (which had very good quality) but since 12 mb is less then 32mb, i upped the CQ to 90, and again i only got a 25mb file.

Is this good or bad? both have excellent quality, much better than i expected. anyway, if this is good, would it be possible to add another dvd to it? totalling around 400minutes @ full D1 ?

ps. the sample size for 400min is still only 31.28mb
pps. another thing, where do i actually enter in what GOP size to use?

Looks like you're dealing with very compressible stuff. But make sure you used the same GOP value in the calculator, in the sampler line, and in TMpgEnc! I've been able to put up to 360 min of NTSC stuff on 1 DVD at FullD1, so maybe you can go up to 400 min.

Where do i enter the GOP in tmpgenc?

Also, with this sample size, doesnt it give a size way too big?

eg. a sample size of 30mb, and each sample goes for approx 45 - 60 seconds. and say the total movie lenth is 306minutes.
30 * 306 = 9180mb,...how can that fit on a dvdr?

Make 1 min samples of 3 or more points in the movie. That average should be close to the final size. Or you could use FitCD Modified. It will take snapshots of the movie and produce a file that will allow a close guess of final movie size.

4.4gb is all that will fit on a DVD-R. You should get around 2-4 hours in that space. I do my stuff at 29fps and 500-5000bit with MPEG audio at 128-224.
