Backing up VOB files?
 

Hello ALL!

After ripping a movie, I made my vcd etc etc. Now I want to get the VOB files off of my HD. (No not by deleting them :wink: )

Is there a way to backup the VOB files to CD-R? They are 1,024,000 in size. I use WinXP. Free if possible. :lol:

Try using WinRar. It compresses far more than WinZip. See how much it will compress a VOB. I haven't tested that yet!.

Hmmm, I will try that out.

I tried compressing a vob file with WinRAR and I ended up with an archive with the same file size as the vob 8O (maybe I didn't have the right settings checked) - I also tried pkzip and it reduced it about 50mb :lol:

Well, that's what I thought. VOB's are pretty much compressed already. That's why they don't compress very well. Just like JPeg pictures.
I'm not aware of any other utilities right now that would compress VOB files. I believe there's a commercial program, forgot the name now, that creates a compresed image of DVD's for viewing on a PC. Forgot the name now :roll:

So, what could I use on WinXP to back up 4.6gb of VOB files onto multi CD-Rs?

You could try a file splitting program. Not very hi-tek but works and maintains the original file structure but in pieces which can be rejoined.

There are freeware versions around.

If you still remember DOS (what's That!!)??????. You could do the same with the /b option (for binaries).

WINRAR allows you to split the file. When I tried to compress the vob, I set it to split at 700mb- so I ended up with vts_01.rar.00-700mb and vts_01.rar.01 337mb

Yes, that is it! In WinRAR you can select all your VOBs and then select the size of the volumes. You will end up with all your vobs inside several volumes that fits in CDR.

Or, if you want to have your vobs playable in the CDs. You can rip the DVDs splitting by chapters and not by vob-files.

When ripping a DVD, can DVD2AVI save the files to smaller VOBs instead of 1,024kb sizes?

Good idea about the winrar or what ever file splitting. :D WE ALL should do it. Back up the orignal VOBs and you always can make new KVCD's when needed without having the DVD again... :wink: :wink:

Or if you can save and WinRaR the "Movie.mpg" that you originally encoded...Or the bin/cue for redo's 8)

DVD2AVI no, but SmartRipper can.
You can split the DVD vobs by chapters, or you can specify max file size for the vobs.

What about cladDVDXP DVD Ripper?

(I meant cladDVDXP not dvd2avi :oops: )

I think dvd-r and dvd-rw will be the best way to back up vobs when the price of the media and the burners go down :wink:

Never used cladDVDXP... I only use SmartRipper.

cladDVDXP is soooooo easy to use. Very fast. I have smartripper but found no reason to use it after using cladDVDXP. Food for thought. :lol:

Try DVDDecrypter 3.1.1.0. I used to use CladDVD XP all the time. It has some features that CladDVD doesn't have. For example when you rip a movie, you get all VOB's and the .ifo. CladDVD only rips the VOB's, but not the .ifo, which is needed if you want to use ChapterXtractor to add the chapters in VCDEasy. So with CladDVD you have to go and manually copy the .ifo file. Also the "streams" selections is very easy in DVDdecrypter. You also have ISO mode, where you can rip your movie and select only what audio channels and subtitles, if you want them, and produce an ISO image ready to burn. So if your ISO file is less than about 4.3GB, you can write this ISO right back to a DVD-R and have an identical DVD backup. Also the develpment of DVDDecrypter is very active, with updates almost every couple of weeks.

No it doesn't. But neither does CladDVD. CladDVD calls the external program DVD2AVI to do it. It just integrates the frameserve options, which is a convenience, but I'd rather use DVD2AVI manually.

Correct, that is what I do now but manully works just as well, just an extra step. :cry:
