video Resolution Recommendations?

I was thinking that a mini guide for resolutions would be useful if someone could throw one together.
like a brie gerneral summary.
example
Dvd - 640x480 - large file - Recommended
Dvd - 352x240 - small file

Avi
640x480 - 352x480 - small file - recommended
etc etc
just put alot of the normal settings and what their normal purposes are for each. It would be quite helpful, esp to me since i have no idea what res i should use for what purpose, like if i have extra room, should i try a higher res or just settle for adding another tv episode to my disk using the same smaller version.

In matter of resolution, there is only one advice : use the higher resolution that give you a decent CQ.

In other words : only your EYES can tell you what resolution to use. There is no generality. Every movie is unique. Encode a sample, watch it, and make your choice.
