I'm tired, because I can't get 99% prediction
For me, the last movie I did (-100MB ) is a failure :!:
If I were to get +-2% on 100% of the encoded movies, then I would be satisfied. The problem is that TMPEG's behaviour doesn't let me achieve that in CQ mode.
Granted, 99% of the times, you'll get ~2% final size with CQMatic. But there are still chances that that other 1% will be way off, and that's not acceptable.
I can't do anything about it, because it's beyond my control, again because of TMPEG's un-linearity.
If I can think of something else ( or I dream of something  ), then I'll dive into coding again
Right now, we'll have to live with CQMatic the way it is

Thought I would try encoding an avi with the latest CQMatic. Results are as follows.

avi optimal v4 script
81 minutes (yeah short)
480x480 mpg1
X3 prediction = CQ 70.97
Wanted Size = 749,216
Final Size = 749,624

Not bad. :D

:?: Since 2 pass seems the only way to work with TMPGEnc's CQ, how is the best way to use it with CQMatic? I think a lot of us don't mind longer encoding cycles (I have a P4 2.53GHz) and would like a simple, straight forward of achieving maximum quality at the expense of encoding time. :?: Could CQMatic have an option that would do this? I don't even mind running two full encodes if necessary, as most of my encoding occurs during the night or while I'm at work.

This is only needed by me for PVR250 captures. I've started to doing KDVDs to DVD, now that blanks are becoming inexpensive. For KDVD, I just use MA script, set CQ at 100 (I know 100 is not really necessary) and encode at 720x480 (I know that 704x480 is adequate). So far, everything has fit, it is very simple to do and KDVD quality is outstanding! For other exercises, like the captures, I wish to stay with CD's and use SKVCD at 352x480 or KVCDx3MPEG2 at 704x480. For these, I would like to maximize CQ for CD space using any method available, using MA, Incredible's, Boulder's and Phil's scripts for different situations.

I just hope, for the benefit of all that the developer of TMPEG will make CQ linear (some day )
:!: This would solve a lot of difficulties. Maybe some day!

Hey nick I have an offtopic question if you don't mind. I see you have the PVR-250 and are re-encoding KVCDs with it. I am thinking of buying this card because it encodes on the fly to SVCD. Is there any reason you are re-encoding your captures? or does the PVR-250 capture RAW too?

Ill give you a fast explanation right now, .. in order that this won't get more *really out of topic* to tell you why we should re-encode "every" kind of capture, no matter if MPEG2, MJPEG etc.

1. Getting rid of things we don't need (for example ... commercials, non-exact beginning, not exact ending of the captured Stream)
2. As we enjoy the benefit of VBR including Notch MAtrix @ CQ .. we shurely do re-encode.

I think it would be a good idea to start a sepatrate Topic in the "Video Capture" part .... there you'll get precise answers ;-)
