KVCD: Steps To Follow encoding DivX Files?
 

Hi Folks!

I'm still trying to increase the quality of my encoded DivX files. I know it's not recommended to encode Divx files with kwags template, but still i try... :)

ok my question is what steps you guys follow to get the best quality and file size out of an divx file?

are there any filters (tmpgenc internal) that you use?

what template do you go for? (i heard that the new PLUS templates don't encode DivX Files any good, but only DVD VOBs...)

Do you use AviSynth?

If the quality of the original DivX is high enough, you'll be quite pleased with the results given by the KVCD templates. I usually use TemporalSoften(2,2), but nothing else.

I _have_ noticed that the newest KVCD templates don't seem to fare as well with at the the one DivX file I've tried it on. But that DivX is also lower quality to begin with, so it is hard to say if the template is too demanding, or the DivX is just too blocky. The original KVCD templates, however, are excellent for DivX files (and result in a lower filesize than the newer templates... since they are DivX anyway it is nice to get them in 1CD when possible). If I get time to try another DivX with initial higher quality, I'll try the latest templates again and see how it comes out.

Ive had good results converting good quality divx (4.11- 5.02 codecs) to vcd mpeg inc kvcd format(s) but only by separating the audio and video streams.

Using virtualdub open the divX avi file - if you try to play it - youll get an error message - dont worry about it.

from menu - File, Save Wav, then use the divX AVI file as the video source in tmpgenc and the saved WAV file as the audio source. Havent tried this with low bitrate less than 910 divx (jus cant visualize a requirement for this) Works great every time for me so far.

All this is on XP/98 /2000 platforms

Just to let you all know. Everything I've done so far encoding with Kwag's Codec's have been from divx. All but 1 was an EXCELLENT source but that one that wasn't still came out with better than original quality. (It somehow reduced blocks) Although I have changed Kwag's codec slightly but not anything with the GOP or the Matrix. Those are norm. But the few settings I have changed have made a drastic difference.

BTW, make sure you pout Motion Search Prescision on Very High with DivX. I've found it make a BIG difference between low and high.

To get good quality conversions, make sure you have good quality DivX files. I had reported that I wasn't having much luck with the latest templates, but it turns out my source wasn't high enough quality.

If you want an example, I took the LOTR DivX release (2 CDs), and ran it with Kwag's latest templates in 352x480 (the source is 640x272). I now have a _very_ impressive 2 CD VCD. The total filesize after conversion (with sound at 160kpbs) was 1.3GB. I still had 300meg leftover! I think I'd still prefer to wait for the retail version and do a true DVD conversion, but it worked nonetheless. The problem with 640x272 DivX files is that they leave an excessively large border :(

if I just change the resolution of my ntsc avi file I have I should still get the same result?
