mpeg1 or mpeg2?

I encoded an avi file and the result came out as a 630 mb m1v file. The clip was 58 minutes long. CQMatic gave me a CQ value of 89,77 (highest I suppose) and when I calculated the Average Bitrate I got 1751.4 kbps, audio set on Bitrate 128. With these short clips, should I still encode as mpeg1 or should I switch to mpeg2?

Well ... in my opinion you only would receive a visual advantage when choosing mpeg2 @ 2000kbit and above.
So in your case I would recommend to choose a higher Audiobitrate to encode with, because if your Source Audio is already 128kbps (As I assume as you post this thread here in the Dvix section) re-encoding using again 128kbit will give you a quality loss.
Also .. what resolution did you choose to encode? Also a big Quality step will be if you rise your resolution to 704x576(480) if your player supports this in non-DVD mode.

My has the format DivX. Mydvx file has ac3 audio and I haven't done anything with the audio yet, I wanted to encode the video first, I just selected 128kbps in Calcumatic because I use do have it so. I chosed to encode with the resolution 544x480 because I use do do that. I had no idea the m1v file would come out 130 mb to smal 8O

So you mean I should have a higher audiobitrate like 160kbps and rise the resolution to 704x480 to resirve better quality even if the CQ will not be as high as with 544x480? am I right :?

Oh! NOW I understand, you're asking yourself what could be the reason that CQmatic didn't calculated the right CQ to fit your stream to one cd.

Well there's no prediction you can totally trust in and will never be. Cause it does not test the compressibility on the Whole movie but on parts of the movie.

So if a script is used (as I assume) can you post it please!

Well in case of CQ 89,77 which gives less filesize to fit one CD (audio included!!! *you will see what I mean*) you really should think about my recommendations as mentioned above.

Even for example a CQ of 70 @ 704x576 will give you a very very good (even better/sharper) image cause it won't be that resized by the player as in the case of 544x576.

BUT we/you calculated wrong!!! ::

In your case of 630MB m1v .... When seeing it with YOUR eyes its even 155MB too small ;-) final size "should" be ca. 785MB
BUT: Please keep in mind that there will be audio added! But 58mins encoded at 128kbit will not result that much!.. the m1v output you received still will give you a too small over all result. ... So script please! ;-)

Here it comes :wink:
Code:

BlindPP(cpu=4)
Blockbuster(method="noise",detail_min=1,detail_max=3,variance=0.1,seed=1)
Convolution3D(1, 6, 12, 6, 8, 2.8, 0)
GripCrop(544, 480, source_anamorphic=false)
GripSize(resizer="LanczosResize")
TemporalSoften(2,5,5,3,2)
DCTFilter(1,1,1,1,1,1,0.5,0)
GripBorders()
LetterBox( 0,0,16,16 )
TextSub("D:\_new.srt")

BTW :) Where can I find a sample to check if my dvd player can play 704x480 non-dvd mode properly :?:

Here you can find a KVCD Compatibility test image including a 704x480 test stream... just burn to CD-R using nero.

704x480 in Sweden???? :?

BTW: Script is ok., cause I thought u where using the MA Routine ... :wink:

I encoded with resolution 704x480 mpeg1 and with the same clip. I reach a CQ of 89,77 again :? Output file size was 657mb, only 31mb larger then when I encoded with res. 544x480. Does this seem to be right :?:

For sure it's correct ! That's the first time I see someone not happy to have a clip that encode at the maximum CQ :-)

Yippieee :!: :lol: :mnkypile:

That's better :-)

Wolfi 11-14-2003 10:57 AM

Damn can't play res. 704x480. Is there any other better res. then 544x480 which maybe can be played on my dvd player :?:

Try 720*480.
