CQMatic produced an oversized file?

Just finished converting a xvid movie to kvcd.
I tried to fit 110min in one cd, but CQMatic produced an oversized file, so I had to use 128 for audio instead of 160.
(Still had to cut part of the end credits.)
The resulting quality wasn't bad, but wasn't great either.
So my questions are...
Is there an advantage of using 'high/highest quality' over 'motion estimate search' when encoding with tmpgenc?
(I always use motion estimate search since it's faster)
Should I turn 'detect scene change' on or off?
Which version of optimal conversion script should I use? (I used v4.)
If I set DC component precision to 10 bits, will I get better quality?
Also, lastly what's the most accurate way of predicting the file size?

Just to know : what was the resolution you used ?

How is the source ? A crappy wvid gives a crappy mpeg.

And I always use High(slow) because you gain 2 or more points on the CQ. No need to use Highest as the gain isn't so valuable.

CQMatic turns it on itelf :-)

Old version are in the thread just for "historical" record. But the V4 is the more achieved one and gives best results.

You will have softer picture (a little blurry if you prefer) so do not do that.

CQMatic in 95% of the case. Other tools are acurate 80% of the time, so CQMAtic is the best one :-)

thanks for the reply

Thanks, I learned a lot from your answers.
I used 528x480 for the resolution.
Actually, I found it was the dvd player that was crappy.
I checked it out on another one, and quality was superb :P
But couple of more questions if you will.
Why use dual channel and not joint stereo or stereo for audio?
And.. is there a way to make selectable subtitle for (k)vcd?

Perhaps too much for that lenght. I generally use 480*480 for a 2h movie.
What was the CQ foudn by CQMatic ? If the value is less than 65, no need to encode : the result will poor.

This is generally the way to do : start the highest resolution (528*480) and find the CQ. If it is below 65, reduce the resolution and start from the beguinig. A so on until you find a CQ that is near 65 or above (the upper, the better).

NEVER use joitn stereo as it screw up the surround effect. Remember that we are encoding a movie, not music, and the surroudn channel is verry important (execpt of course if you do not have a Dolby Surround receiver).
I do not use Dual myslef but Kwag recommend it as it seems to be better with DPL II receiver. I do not have such receiver so I stick to stereo mode.

Does your player handle them ? Because very few does.
You can DL a sample test here to check the capabilities of your player :

http://www.dvdrhelp.com/svcd

(note : selectable subtitle is possible only in SVCD, not in VCD. In wich mode do you burn your KVCD ?)

bluedha 12-30-2003 12:01 AM

Ah.. I see..
Well, I tested the sample (SVCD NTSC with selectable SVCD sub), and
subtitle doesn't show on my player!
I have Norcent DP300.
I figured it would work from the compatibility list on dvdrhelp.com.
I guess I'll have to hard encode the subtitles.
Last question, is max bitrate of 2500 too high for kvcd?
I know it depends on the movie, but in general...
(I checked my recent conversion with bitrate viewer and highest bitrate was around 2300.)

Too hight, not. But a little waste of space probably. According Kwag, whith MA script you have very good results with 200 as maximum. For my part I use 2300 as maximum.

Great, eaxactly the value I use :-)

Now you're typing too fast Phil
It's 2,000Kbps, not 200 :!:

Hi,I would like to clarify things for myself

Isin't it 2000 for the MA script but higher when using the optimal scripts for avi's :?

Dialhot 12-30-2003 07:01 PM

Yes it is.

Thanx Phil
