Kvcdx2 vs. skvcd?

i will be doing some testing today, to see which suits me best.
anyone have any ideas as to which is better for resolution and file size?
What I've been looking for is something compatible to what CCE can do with 4pass vbr in mpg2 format using tmpge, basically the best quality 2 80 min cdr's can hold. will post what i find using my apex 1500ad, nero and tmpge.

prob 1

ok, kvcdx2 has an audio gap every 3 sec, video looks good though
have to remux

bruceleroy 08-03-2002 04:31 PM

audio fix

upping the frame rate to 29 fixed audio, but video has a slight jerkiness

bruceleroy 08-03-2002 04:43 PM

uhg

Ok the SKVCd looks bad in my opinion, with the stock settings there is terrible block noise/pixelation on my tests. I think the kvcdx2 looks better, but isnt as smooth. Anyone have similar findings?

TKS 08-03-2002 04:51 PM

yeah!

I agree the SKVCD doesnt look as good as the KVCDx2, nothing horrible though. If you wanna fix the audio gap on yer apex 1500 try changin your movie (if its NTSCfilm) to PAL rez's and keep the 23.9 framerate....

Hmm im wondering if there is a possibility of using the matrix within kwags template with cce? Or am i just dreaming?

tks

Hey bruceleroy,

I have almost all similar findings...
For my opinion, and the movies I have made, I think that the best way to SKVCD is to load the KVCD Plus 704x480 (ntsc) and change these settings:

- Stream Type: MPEG-2 Super VideoCD (VBR)
- Encode Mode: 3:2 pulldown when playback
- Size: 480x480
- Max Bitrate: 2550 ( I see no blocks  )
- VBR_CQ Quality: 20

As I said, these settings are great for my taste, and my sources.
And you can fit 120+ on 2 CDs.
I fitted Artificial Intelligence (145min) with great quality
Artificial Intelligence is a very dark and slow action film, so it has good compression...

Well, I think that the only way to find the best settings for your source and your equipment is experiment... a great many of experiments.
I hope I could help you in some way.

hmm

Ill give that a shot then................

Hey Muadib, is the 3:2 pulldown only for TV's that have that capability?
I was at best buy yesterday and noticed mostly progressive scan dvd's offer that feature and only certain tv's benefit from it(digital?)

Hi bruceleroy,

Don't know abot it... just know that my movie skips (like fastforward) evry 3 seconds if I don't use it.

Muaddib, excellent suggestion on your alternate SKVCD config. I tried it and it fixed almost all the occasional video quirks (like mini-bullet time effect problems). It still happens a bit, but it's far more subtle when it happens. Only really detectable 2 or 3 times in a 43 min X-File rip I did. The quality was incredible and the size was even smaller than when I just used the SKVCD template as is. (of course that could be to the lower audio bit rate). Anyway, just wanted to say thanks and if anyone can figure out what is causing that last little bit of video jitter, please feel free to enlighten us.

FYI: I'm using an APEX 703 DVD player.

Hi Chuck Roulette,

I'm glad that I could help you in some way. :D
About the little bit of video jitter, 2 or 3 times in 43 minutes, is so few times... isn't it a media problem?

Chuck Roulette 08-14-2002 05:58 AM

A media problem? I suppose anything is possible, but anything else I encode with my other SVCD templates or even SVCDs that I've download all work perfectly fine in my APEX 703. So I'm pretty sure that's not the problem. I like your way of encoding for many reasons, but the fact that no demux/remux is required like the SKVCD template I think makes the biggest difference (as far as the video jitter goes). I've noticed that when I used the SKVCD template that TMPGenc gives an error message after remuxing. The final product still works, but I think that might be part of the problem. Also, my APEX player just might not be able to handle your version of the SKVCD template as well as other players. I love my APEX, but I'll admit it's not the best player out there. I've just finished another ep of a X-Files rip and encoded it your way. I'll watch it tonight and see how it runs. I was even thinking of picking up a JVC DVD player from Best Buy and seeing how they play. Hell, I can always take it back if it doesn't work.
