FFMPEG: Do ffvfw and mencoder/ffmpeg give the same results?

As I was away for some time, I couldn't get up to the latest results in MPEG Encoding around here... I've some little questions:

1. Do ffvfw and mencoder/ffmpeg give the same results (as they both use libavcodec...)?
(I'd like to backup LOTR 1,2 and 3 on 1 DVDR :D So a lil bit of scripting would be nice)

2. I've seen that you take 1 pass CBR Mode to create KDVDs... why not 2 pass with an exact prediction and VBR :-?

Hi,
Haven't tested mencoder/ffmpeg in the proper way maybe because I wasn't able to use scripts, but I
would say that ffvfw's quality is in fact "au pair" with CCE/Tmpg or maybe even better.
In terms of speed (at least with my pc's specs.) CCE is still the king, though.
We are using a constant bitrate mode that performs more like a constant quality mode with VBR in fact
Well it's more like a Average bitrate...
Wouldn't mind the 2 pass mode because with ffvfw there's room for everybody. I think you would
be ok with a temporal smoother only static script and still be able to put 3 movies with MP2 audio on one DVD.

Hi guys :P

Perhaps I'm a little stupid or slow (work is overwhelming during the day)
but, isn't mencoder for the MAC platform ??

If not, is there a windows platform too ??
Sorry, but I don't really know too much of mencoder, and was wondering
if it's a command-line type app. I love these (or those apps that accept
such command-line options) :P

Thanks all,

I know mencoder for Linux (it's original origin) and there is also a Windows Port...

Maybe there is a mac one too :-?

Yep,
Mencoder is also based on libavcodec and is a "better" ffmpeg.
There are only Win and Linux versions for the moment being.
Find win32 port here http://armory.nicewarrior.org/projects/cygmp/ just scrool down.
Looks like it could beat ffvfw and CCE in speed.
The downside is there is no avs script support and not much documentation.
We tried everything, VFAPI, makeAVIS, etc.
The stupid thing only reads VOBs/MPEG2s/AVIs/DivX/XviD...
Though it has numerous filters in the cmd line arguments like ffvfw.
We were just talking about mencoder (me and Hydeus) when Kwag and Dano joined.
Dano I believe was the one that pointed to ffvfw as it was script compatible and libavcodec based 8)
We just got so much carried away testing ffvfw that we didn't even noticed that we were writing about ffvfw in a mencoder thread
That's when Kwag created the new thread.
