KDVD: Mpeg-1 vs. mpeg-2 about same file size?

Hi guys, needing some advice here.
Need : Fit on dvdr as much as posible whit good quality (at least vhs)
Questions : Would be better quality using mpg1 or mpg2? having same file size and running time.
Wich settings should i use for mpg2? (Encoder, framesize, framerate, bitrate, script if using avs)
Thanks in advance

Hi leo,

For DVD compliancy, MPEG-1 is only supported at 352x240(288)
So if you want to use other resolutions, like 352x480(576), 704x480(576) or 720x480(576), you must use MPEG-2
If you want to go MPEG-1, then by all means go with TMPEG.
That will give you at least VHS quality and the best MPEG-1 quality you can get, and fit a lot on a single DVD-R
Just remember that for DVD, the audio must be encoded at 48Khz.

I've found it !!!!!

The answer to my prayers. Thoug a bit advanced, a good guide to mpg2 with cce (vmesquita); I know, i should look for before post, sorry.

Are those other mpg2 resolutions dvd compliant? In your opinion the augment of resolution is worth? (I'm asumming biger resolution leads to biger file size), can I expect a noticeable better quality?

thanks kwag

Hi Leo,

Yes, the bigger the resolution the bigger the filesize. Is it worth? I would say it depends on the matherial. MY advice is the following:
1)352x240 - I use only for cartoons or if I want to fit a lot of material coming from a Bad VHS source
2) 352x480- I use for interlaced musicals and music videos.
3) 704x480 - movies
4) 720x480 - Only for 1 movie-DVD, sincec looks like 704x480 buti it's less compressible.
