CQ Override Box
 

I tried Dialhot's static script through CQMatic to encode an avi. The predicted CQ (X3) was 89.64. However, after encoding the file was too big (over 1 gig) so I thought I could use the CQ override option in CQMatic to manually lower the CQ and re-encode. But I couldn't get the CQ override box to do anything. What is its purpose? Or better yet, how do I get CQMatic to use an input CQ rather than the predicted value?

The purpose of the box is only to start from the CQ that is in the tpr insteed of 60. But in every case the optimal CQ is computed ! That's only the starting point taht change.

You CQ is too hight (are you sure about 89.64, and not 89.57 ?) You probably have an error.

It was 89.64. I didn't recognize that it must be an error so I went ahead and encoded. As I said earlier, the m1v file came out at over 1 gig. What would you recommend I do to use a lower CQ? Thanks.

Press the settings button and follow kwag's rules.

Yes, I make sure the source range is alway 0 and -1. Even when it says so, I always click DEFAULT and ok just in case. I am rechecking the "cut Editing", but I am pretty sure I always have all the boxes in the Advanced tab unchecked.

I rechecked the "Cut Editing" box and found the reset option greyed out. The error can't be from not following Kwag's instructions. Thanks, anyway.

It's possible taht 89.64 is the correct value for your particular case. So no problem with that. But CQMatic isn't 100% accurate and whith such high value, an error of 0.1 in the CQ can lead to 100 MB too much.
That's where your problem is. Just do a manual encode with CQ=89. Your eyes won't see the differerence.

Check your log, and see if you have negative file size differences. If you do, you have an error in your settings :!:

That was what I wanted to find out in my original question. Do you mean ignore CQMatic and set the CQ in TMPGenc to 89? In that case, will the script still be controlling the encode without CQMatic? Thanks.

That's exactly that. Forget CQMatic for this video. It gave you a "near to target" value, now you can just use tmpgenc alone.
