Convert 3 hour movie dvd to KDVD?

my family normally gets a lot of indian dvds, these are original disks, single layed (4.7g), and normaly anything up to 190 minutes on a disk with dolby digital 5.1. now i was wondering how they do this? you can fit 2 hours in a standard disk at best quality, so are they using a kdvd template or something similar? the quality is what ud expect from a original dvd ...excellent.
any ideas anyone, just a bit curious

120 min on a 4.7GB disc gives 4500 Kbit/s as average bitrate.
180 min gives 3300 Kbit/s (I took an audio at 128 Kbit/s)

A lot of movies won't suffer to be "limited' to 3300 Kbit/s because they are easy to compress. That's perhaps the case of these indians movies.

90% of all avaiable original manufactred DVDs are based on a DVD-9 and not DVD-5 size format!, meams that DVD-9 gots up to ca. 8-9 GB which is needed for a good orig-mastering of a movie which contains 190min and maybe multiple audio 5.1 added.

DVD-5 therefore 4.7GB is a consumer format we do use for our backups.

So your indian sources IMHO are just copies :!:

Don't forget that India's movie industry produces more films each year than Hollywood (near 800 !). I greatly possible that the local DVD production is done on DVD-5 and not DVD-9 beacause they are easier and cheaper to produce (official copyrighted DVD can actually be done a dvd-r burn on a PC :-))

But according to your last statement: You could be right :)

thanks guys, all the original disks i got are from genuine retailers like hmv and the disks are 4.7gb as iv checked on my computer, so i think ur probably right about them being DVD-5, i got a stack that are from asia and they are also 4.7gb ( single movies as well as two in ones)
