KVCD Basics?
I'm capturing VHS to the hard drive. I'm confused as to what resolution I should capture with; being that the final will be KVCD. The choices are full d1 (720*480) or ½d1 (352*480). Thanks for getting me over this hurdle.

2 - Your capture resolution depends of how much video you want to capture, and in what media you want to put it. But I think you must to capture at max resolution possible. Later you can resize it, without significant lost of quality. But if you capture at less res, an later you want to resize up it, you will loss a lot of quality. |

My thinking (not experience) is that if I use kdvd ½d1 at 352*480 that I could caputre at 640*480 or less (keeping the /480) and I would be alright? Again, thanks |

I think your capture software, will permit you to capture in more standard res, like 720*480. Just try the settings. But if not, capture at max res you can. Then encode using Optimal Script for avisynth with resizing options enabled. BTW, are you capturing DivX, XviD or MPG? |

I don't know how much GB or Mb can to have your capture nor if it is mpg2, but if it is mpg2 (capture at 720*480) audio at 48 Mhz, with less than 4.7 GB, you can burn it directly.
You don't tell me what kind of video is your capture. (mpg1, mpg2, divx or xvid) Maybe you need to read this thread: http://www.kvcd.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8753 Better than this, your answer: Capture at 720*480 Later we will see how to reencode if necessary. |

My initial question is what resolution to capture with (352-240/480, 704/720-480 etc.)? I plan to use KDVD that has 2 formats (½/full d1). When should either be used/do they both have the same result? Prior to this post, I have been using 41kHz and the conversion program changed it to 48khz; is this ok? Another issue/problem is alot of dropped frames when capturing with Huffy2.11 at high resolutions. I have an AMD Athlon 1.4Ghz.. soon to upgrade to Barton 2500/3000; this hopefully might resolve this issue. Is MJPEG just as good as Huffy? Thanks for your support. |
