KVCD Minimum bitrates?

Hey folks.

Just a quick question. Is there any other way apart from "trial and error" of determining the minimum bitrate that a particular stand-alone will play :?:

I ask generally so I can safely encode backups of some 3 hour movies I own without wasting CDRs. :(

Thanks.

You can burn a cdrw test with many short samples encoded with different minimun bitrate.

um...isn't that 'trial and error'?

it's not a bitrate or kvcd problem.
each label/model of standalones suport more or less min bitrate, ok?
one of my players suport min=50, the other min=150 !

do samples ~1 minutes each using differents values for min bitrate,
burn in cd-rw and test your standalone :!:

actually it is not trial and error... if you encode a sample with a min. bitrate of let's say 0-100 and it works, you're on the safe side...

rds_correia 04-11-2004 01:03 PM

Yeah J3ll,
But, that sample needs to be made of a super low motion clip, like the begining of the movie
which is usually very dark and almost NO motion :)
If it plays fine then your ready to rock
Cheers

Are multiples in one.
With cdrw you won't waste any cd.

Make some test movies with CBR at 300 and less till your player made problems. So you know it very exactly.

fingerbob 04-12-2004 10:36 AM

OK I think I'll try starting at min bitrate 300 and work down.

Just out of curiosity, will it make any difference to detecting the min rate if I use differing max rates? I mean using min = 200 and max = 900 will undoubtedly give worse results than min = 200 max = 1500. If the max has more scope to play with, then it will (I assume) create less instances whereby it needs to use the lowest bitrate.

Hmmm, maybe this isn't as simple as I at first thought. I guess I gotta find the lowest combination of min/max rather than the lowest min.

yes, that's cool!
this is the "idea" !

Woldn't it be wiser to use max=min? That way it shouldn't matter what clip you try.
BTW, Pioneer DV-444 seems to dislike bitrates lower than ~700-800.

I got Pioneer Dv 366 and it plays with Min Bitrate 0 without any problem.

For Test this methot may be ok, but not for encoding because youll get CBR doing it that way.

Butters2005 08-24-2005 08:28 PM

with CBR at 300 i do mine at 900

kwag 08-24-2005 10:03 PM

Hi Butters2005,

If your standalone player can use a lower MIN bitrate, you will have more bit distribution available on high action scenes.
If you fix the bitrate floor at 900Kbps, you waste bits on scenes that don't need that bitrate, such as low lit and low action scenes.
